On October 1st, 2025, from 1pm – 5pm at the Stanley A Milner Edmonton Public Library, Goodwill is once again hosting our annual Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) event, this called “DEAM Connect presented by Goodwill Industries of Alberta.”

This year’s agenda is as follows:
From 1pm – 2pm a networking event, where people can connect with other non-profit organizations/programs or other business leaders to discuss how services can help either a business or individual.
From 2pm – 4pm speakers and performances will enlighten the attendees to be inspired by their stories.
From 4pm – 5pm post networking for those who may have not had the chance pre-show.

This year’s speakers include:
Riccardo Baldini
A concert pianist who became paralyzed and lost the ability to play the piano for many years was thrilled to make his return to the stage with the help of a technology he developed. Working with engineers, he co-developed Resonate, a tool that lets him control the foot pedals using his mouth. Recently the team has been communicating with the Glenrose Hospital Foundation’s research and innovation department about collaborating on the project.
Austin Hinchey
A cornerstone of the Canadian Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team since 2007, Hinchey has served as both captain and leader, making a profound impact on the para sport in Canada over nearly two decades of international competition.
Gina Martin
Gina Martin is a disability awareness educator living with multiple disabilities, including blindness, ADHD and epilepsy. With over 40 years of lived experience and deep roots in the disability community, Gina helps people move past discomfort and uncertainty by teaching respectful, practical strategies for inclusion.
Madison Tevlin
A co-star of Woody Harrelson the movie "Champions" Madison is an acclaimed keynote speaker, a trailblazing advocate for inclusion and Down syndrome, and a celebrated content creator. Her effortless ability to connect with audiences is praised by all who work with her. Your audience is bound to be enchanted by Madison – that’s a guarantee.
Madison Tevlin is the headliner for this event and will help drive the awareness portion for Disability Employment Awareness Month as well as Goodwill. You may recognize Madison from the Down Syndrome commercial last year: https://youtu.be/FKSjQQ8O1cA?si=tV7hDBZFtoUx1Qvm

Mark your calendars! AAC Camp Alberta 2024 will be held August 30 - September 1 (Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon) at the ACT Recreation Centre in Rundle Park in Edmonton. Please see the attached SAVE-the-DATE flyer . Please share with anyone in your network who might be interested.

AAC Camp Alberta is an annual weekend family camp for children with complex communication needs and their families, including parents and siblings. Children ages 5 to 19 who are using robust AAC communication systems are eligible to attend. Children must already have an AAC system (speech-generating device, PODD book, etc.) and have basic proficiency accessing and navigating the system.

Registration fees (subsidized through donations) are based on a family of 3, but additional family members can attend for a small extra fee. Note that each camper using AAC must be accompanied by at least one adult family member or caregiver.

Campers who use AAC are assigned a 1:1 counselor (a graduate student in speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, or physical therapy) who supports their participation (and multimodal communication) in camp activities throughout the weekend. This frees up parents/caregivers to attend sessions led by AAC experts (professionals, experienced parents, and augmented communicators) or to relax/unwind and network with other parents. Counselors are also on hand to supervise activities and for siblings 5 years of age & up.

The ACT Recreation Centre is a fully accessible facility nestled in the river valley in Edmonton's Rundle Park. We have access to both indoor and outdoor spaces at the ACT Centre, including a main hall for full camp gatherings (also a back-up indoor activity space in the event of bad weather), a separate room for parent sessions, a sensory room, an accessible indoor pool and change rooms, an accessible playground, a covered picnic site, and lots of open grassy space behind the centre. There are paved paths throughout the park and a small lake with paddleboats.

Please note that this is a day camp (not an overnight camp). For camper families attending from out of town, we are working to secure a block of rooms at a nearby hotel at a discounted rate.

Registration will open in March - registration forms will be available on the camp website: uab.ca/AACCamp by March 7. The registration deadline is May 15, but you can also take advantage of an early bird rate if you register by April 15.

For more information, including photos, videos, and stories from past AAC Camps, visit our website.
Please also follow us on social media: AAC Camp Alberta (Facebook) or .camp.ab (Instagram).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING EQUIPMENT REQUESTS:

Casinos are where we get money to provide funding for equipment requests. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic all casinos have been pushed back. The result of this is that we will not be accepting any more requests until we have had a our casino and the funds have been transferred into our account which looks to sometime in 2022.
