Educational Lab Technologist II, Chemical Technology Program
School of Applied Sciences and Technology

NAIT’s Chemical Technology Program, in the School of Applied Sciences and Technology, has an opening for a temporary (with possible 1 year extension) Educational Laboratory Technologist. The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and have a background that complements the courses delivered by the program. This position supports the Chemical Technology Program for technical and lab services as well as other programs at NAIT for the provision of lab supplies and the management of hazardous waste.
Responsibilities:
• Preparation and set-up of laboratory courses in the program for use by students and instructors
• Play an active role in all technical support services in the operation and maintenance of a preparation lab.
• Ensure that all laboratory areas are clean and tidy for student and staff use.
• Preparation of multiple unknowns and glassware for the laboratory courses
• Provide support to instructors in the explanation and demonstration of laboratory equipment/instruments and procedures.
• Provide a clean and safe environment for students, staff and working colleagues.
• Maintenance and operation of the central vacuum system.
• Maintenance of the central DI water system and the point-of-use DI polishing systems.
• Testing of eye wash station and emergency showers.
• Provide support in the use and maintenance of computers and computer related activities.
• Maintain records and related activities for SDS and WHMIS compliance.
• Provide support in the operation and maintenance of a central warehouse facility for lab supplies.
• Provide support for the management of hazardous waste for programs at NAIT.
• Daily routine maintenance of the gas manifold room and G001A manifold to provide adequate supply of gas to all labs.
• Facilitate the ordering of cryogens and gases.
• Organize and administer the student laboratory equipment check-in/out.
• Set-up, maintain, calibrate and complete minor repairs of laboratory equipment and instruments used by staff and students for lab courses in the program.
Qualifications:
• A diploma in Chemical Technology or equivalent and a minimum of one to two years relevant work experience; a combination of related education and work experience may be considered.
• Capacity and willingness to expand knowledge and skills that complement the program’s evolving needs.
• Self-motivated and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Effective time management is essential
• Must be physically able to lift 50 lbs.
