The orchid symbolizes strength, growth, and renewal. With its ability to thrive in diverse environments, it serves as a powerful reminder that healing and transformation are possible, even in the face of adversity.

We are incredibly grateful to our Illuminating Hope Orchid Partner, Brown Law Group, for their generous support of The Today Centre and this year's Illuminating Hope Garden Cocktail Party.

Their partnership helps make this event possible while supporting our ongoing work to provide accessible, integrated services for individuals and families impacted by family violence.

Thank you for helping cultivate hope, resilience, and brighter futures in our community. 💙

Family violence isn’t always visible, but there are often signs that someone may need support.

Changes in behaviour, frequent absences, controlled communication, physical indicators, or difficulty focusing can all point to something deeper. While these signs don’t always mean violence is present, they can be important signals that something isn’t right.

Awareness matters. Recognizing the signs is one step toward creating safer, more supportive communities where people feel seen, heard, and able to access help when they need it.

Today, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation and TELUS Canadian Community Board for their generous funding support of transitional comfort kits. For youth and their children leaving unsafe homes, the journey toward safety often begins with urgent and overwhelming needs. Everyday essentials, such as food, clothing, hygiene products, and household supplies, are foundational in rebuilding stability after trauma. More than practical support, these kits represent dignity, care, and hope as individuals move beyond crisis toward independence. Together, in partnership with TELUS Canadian Community Board, we are helping create safer, stronger and more hopeful futures. We are deeply grateful to TELUS for your generosity and support!

Thank you, TELUS & TELUS Friendly Future Foundation!

We will also be receiving an Alberta Government Legislative Scroll from MLA Brooks Arcand-Paul, recognizing the important work The Today Centre does to support victims and survivors of family violence, while educating the community on prevention and how to recognize and respond to family violence.

Guests can also look forward to an exciting silent auction, including a generous grand prize from Porter Airlines: a round-trip for two in PorterClassic to anywhere Porter flies!

Groundbreaking News in Canada

The Supreme Court of Canada has recognized a new tort of intimate partner violence, creating a legal pathway for survivors to pursue damages for patterns of abuse that go beyond isolated incidents of physical violence.

This decision recognizes that intimate partner violence can include coercive control, isolation, humiliation, surveillance, financial control, sexual coercion, intimidation, and other forms of harm that affect a person’s safety, dignity, autonomy, and wellbeing.

This matters because family violence is often not one single event. It can be a pattern of behaviours used to create fear, control, and dependency. Recognizing the cumulative impact of this harm is an important step toward more responsive systems and greater access to justice for survivors.

At The Today Centre, we know that naming family violence clearly is part of prevention, intervention, and support. This decision reinforces what survivors, advocates, and service providers have long understood: abuse can take many forms, and its impacts deserve to be recognized.

If you or someone you know is experiencing family violence, support is available.

May 14 is Moose Hide Campaign Day, a day to stand together to end violence against women and children.

The Moose Hide Campaign began as a grassroots movement along the Highway of Tears in northern British Columbia, led by Indigenous men committed to taking a stand against gender-based violence. Today, it continues to grow as a call to action for all people to take responsibility, have difficult conversations, and be part of change.

Family violence is not an individual issue. It is rooted in systems, histories, and patterns that require collective awareness and accountability to address.

Wearing the moose hide pin is a symbol of that commitment. It represents a personal pledge to honour, respect, and protect women and children, and to actively challenge violence in all its forms.

At The Today Centre, we recognize that prevention requires ongoing learning, listening, and action.

This May 14, take a moment to reflect on the role we each play in creating safer communities, https://moosehidecampaign.ca/
