📣 Community Research Participation Opportunity 📣

Sherbrooke Community League is helping share an important research opportunity from the University of Alberta’s Precision Medicine in Autism (PRISMA) research group.

The study is exploring experiences and perspectives related to genetic testing for autism in Alberta, with the goal of improving care, resources, and healthcare supports for autistic individuals and their families.

Researchers are looking to better understand:
🧩 Knowledge and experiences with genetic testing
🧩 Barriers and opportunities within the healthcare system
🧩 Perspectives from individuals, families, and community members

Participation involves completing an online survey that takes approximately 20 minutes. Some participants may also be invited to participate in an optional follow-up interview.

Be sure to take a look through this month’s newsletter for updates on upcoming summer events, programs, fundraising initiatives, volunteer opportunities, and everything happening around the league this season.

This will be our last newsletter before summer programming kicks fully into gear, with the next edition returning in September.

From Rock the Park and the Edmonton Open Mic Festival to pickleball, community garage sales, sports & recreation programming, and more — it’s shaping up to be an amazing summer in Sherbrooke!

🌳🪲 Help Protect Alberta’s Ash Trees! 🪲🌳

Neighbours can play an important role in helping monitor and protect our urban forest from the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), an invasive insect that threatens ash trees across Canada.

A new community monitoring project is encouraging residents to help identify and report signs of Emerald Ash Borer activity in Alberta. Early detection is critical in helping municipalities respond quickly and protect vulnerable trees.

Signs to watch for include:
🌿 Canopy thinning or branch dieback
🪵 Bark splitting or unusual shoots growing from the trunk
🐦 Woodpecker damage on bark
🕳️ Distinctive D-shaped exit holes
🐛 Visible insect activity on or near ash trees

If you notice possible signs of Emerald Ash Borer, you can submit photos and observations through the project page below to support local monitoring efforts.

Join us this summer for an amazing celebration of local music, performers, creativity, and community at the Edmonton Open Mic Festival on July 4!

This exciting community festival is growing from what began as Community Music Day into a full festival experience featuring local performers, community connection, and a full day of entertainment in the park.
