In 2024, the Eastend Economic Development Committee (EEDC) took on the goal of bringing a new digital X-ray system and laboratory upgrades to the Wolf Willow Health Centre, an important investment in rural healthcare for Eastend and surrounding communities. The idea was not new; more than 10 years ago, fundraising efforts begun with a donation from Crescent Point Energy Corp., but the project was unable to move forward at that time.

With the EEDC taking on the initiative in 2024, new momentum was given to the project. Considerable work and collaboration followed, with the Town of Eastend, RM of White Valley No. 49 and RM of Arlington No. 79 worked together and meeting with health authorities and government officials. Following the necessary approvals from the Saskatchewan Health Authority and provincial government, permission was received to fundraise for the project.

The EEDC reached out to municipalities, businesses, corporations, organizations and individuals throughout the region, asking for support for the project. The response was incredible, with donations coming in from across the region.

As plans for the Gala began, the EEDC once again reached out to the community for support through live and silent auction items, sponsorships and volunteer help. The generosity was overwhelming and helped may the Fundraising Gala, held in August 22 a wonderful success and an important milestone in the campaign.

The EEDC and Mayor Alan Howard of Eastend were honoured to welcome Honourable Lori Carr, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors and Rural and Remote Health; MP Jeremy Patzer; MLA Doug Steele; James Leroy, Reeve of the RM of White Valley No. 49; Donald Lundberg, Reeve of the RM of Arlington No. 79; Mayor Michelle Mackenzie of Maple Creek; Mayor Brady Berg of Frontier; Sharon Dickie, Councillor for the Town of Shaunavon; and Mayor Sean Checkley of Fox Valley.

Minister Carr brought greetings, Mayor Howard gave Grace, Casey Ziegler kept the evening flowing as MC, and Ralph Oberie brought plenty of energy and excitement as auctioneer for the Live Auction. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the Sierra Hutterite Colony, followed by an evening of bidding, great company and entertainment by the G4 Band.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered, sponsored, contributed an auction item, placed a bid or helped behind the scenes. The generosity shown at the Gala was an incredible reminder of what our communities can accomplish when we work together.

The project continues to move forward, and funds raised are being held in trust by the Town of Eastend. Every contribution brings us closer to improved diagnostic services and stronger rural healthcare for Eastend and surrounding communities.

Donations can still be made by cheque payable to the Town of Eastend or by e-transfer to [email protected].
