FIREFIGHTERS’ NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY.

Today, Canada honours the firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Every year, on the second Sunday in September, firefighters, families and communities across the country come together to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

For the fire service, these are more than names on a memorial.

They are firefighters who answered the call. They are colleagues, friends, mentors, parents, spouses, sons and daughters who dedicated themselves to protecting their communities and did not return home.

Their sacrifice is carried forward by the families they left behind, by the firefighters who served beside them, and by generations of firefighters who continue to answer that same call.

Today, the Canadian flag flies at half-mast across the country in their honour, while members of the fire service gather at the Canadian Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa to remember Canada’s fallen.

We honour their service.
We remember their sacrifice.

Always remember. Never forget.

25 YEARS LATER. NEVER FORGOTTEN.

Twenty-five years ago today, on September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks claimed 2,977 lives.

Among those killed were 343 members of the FDNY and a New York City Fire Patrolman who answered the call and ran toward danger while thousands of others were trying to escape.

Twenty-four Canadians were also among those whose lives were taken that day.

September 11 was a terrorist attack. There should be no ambiguity about what happened that day or about the courage and sacrifice of those who responded.

For the fire service, 343 remains a sacred number.

It represents courage, service and sacrifice. It represents members who reported for duty that morning and never returned home to their families.

And the toll did not end on September 11.

More than 400 FDNY members have since died from illnesses related to their work at the World Trade Center, while thousands more continue to live with the lasting physical and mental health effects of their exposure.

Today, we remember all those who lost their lives, the families who were forever changed, and the first responders whose service and sacrifice continued long after that day.

Always remember. Never forget.

As East Gwillimbury moves toward the 2026 municipal election, the East Gwillimbury Professional Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 4985, wants residents and candidates to understand what guides our advocacy.

Local 4985 represents 32 full-time members of East Gwillimbury Fire and Emergency Service, including firefighters and members working in fire prevention and public education.

Our members contribute to protecting this community through emergency response, fire prevention and public education.

Our priority is straightforward:

Public safety comes first.

East Gwillimbury is growing significantly, and the fire service must be able to meet both the current and future needs of our community.

Our priorities are clear:

Adequate on-duty emergency response staffing
Timely and reliable emergency response
Safe and effective fireground operations
Strong fire prevention and public education
Fire stations, apparatus, equipment and resources that meet current needs and keep pace with future community growth
Firefighter health, safety, training and wellness
Adoption, funding and implementation of EGFES’s new long-term Fire Master Plan and its established timelines

We have already met with municipal candidates who have reached out to our Association, and we will continue to meet with any candidate who reaches out to us looking to learn more about the fire service, public safety and the future of emergency response in East Gwillimbury.

Those conversations are important.

We want candidates to understand the realities of providing fire protection in a rapidly growing municipality. We want to hear their plans, ask questions and understand whether they are prepared to support the people, infrastructure and resources required to provide a strong, professional and effective fire service.

East Gwillimbury Fire and Emergency Services is developing a new long-term Fire Master Plan, with defined timelines, that will be presented to the next Council. We believe the next Council has an important responsibility to seriously consider that professional plan, adopt it, and make the investments necessary to implement it.

As we move toward the election, one of the questions that matters most to us is simple:

Will you make public safety a priority and support the investments required to ensure East Gwillimbury has a properly staffed, properly equipped and effective fire service as our community grows?

Support for firefighters is always appreciated. But supporting firefighters means more than saying the right things.

We aren’t asking candidates to simply say they support firefighters.

We’re asking them to support the fire service East Gwillimbury needs.

Over the coming months, Local 4985 will continue sharing factual information about staffing, emergency response, fire prevention, community growth and long-term fire-service planning so residents can better understand the challenges facing the fire service and why these decisions matter.

SEPTEMBER SAFETY RESET

September brings a change in routine for many families. With school back, schedules getting busier and cooler weather around the corner, it’s a good time to take a few minutes and check a few things around the home.

A few simple reminders:

Keep doors, stairs and hallways clear so everyone has a safe way out.
Review family routines and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.
Check heating equipment before colder weather arrives.
Make sure house numbers are visible from the street.
Take a quick look for damaged cords, overloaded outlets or other hazards that may have been overlooked during the summer.

Small checks now can help prevent bigger problems later.

A new routine is a good time to check.

LITHIUM-ION BATTERY SAFETY

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes and e-scooters.

A few simple precautions can help reduce the risk of fire:

Use the battery and charger recommended for your device.
Charge batteries on a hard surface and away from beds, couches and other soft materials.
Keep charging devices and batteries away from exits.
Stop using a battery if it is swollen, damaged, overheating or showing other signs of failure.
Do not modify or tamper with lithium-ion batteries.
Dispose of damaged or worn-out batteries through an appropriate battery or hazardous-waste program.

If something doesn’t look or feel right with a battery, stop using it.

Charge safely. Check for damage. Store safely.

HOME ESCAPE PLANNING

Working alarms give you the warning. A practiced home escape plan helps make sure everyone knows what to do next.

Take a few minutes with your family to:

Identify two ways out of your home where possible.
Make sure exits, hallways and stairs are clear.
Choose a safe meeting place outside.
Make sure children know how to get out and where to go.
Practice your escape plan together.
Once you’re out, stay out and call 911 (tel:911) from a safe location.

A fire is not the time to figure out your plan.

Know your way out. Practice it before you need it.

SMOKE & CO ALARM SAFETY

Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms provide the early warning you need when seconds matter.

Take a few minutes to make sure the alarms in your home are ready:

Test smoke and CO alarms monthly.
Make sure everyone in your home recognizes the sound of each alarm.
Check batteries and replace them when required.
Check the age of your alarms and replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Never ignore a chirping, low-battery or end-of-life warning.

A working alarm can give you the time you need to get out safely.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY

With students heading back to school, our roads, sidewalks and school zones are getting busier again.

Please take a little extra time and stay alert:

Slow down in school zones.
Watch for children at crosswalks and along roadsides.
Be prepared to stop for a school bus when its red lights are flashing or stop arm is activated.
Put the phone away and keep your attention on the road.
Give yourself a little extra time during the morning and afternoon rush.

A few extra seconds of patience can make a big difference in keeping our kids and our community safe.

The Executive Board of the East Gwillimbury Professional Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 4985, extends sincere congratulations to Susan Lahey on her election as MPP for York-Simcoe.
Susan has built a strong working relationship with our association through her willingness to listen to firefighters and engage on matters affecting the fire service, firefighters health and safety, and public safety in our community.
