Remembering Retired Assistant District Chief - Jim Osborne

June 9, 1944 – August 27, 2026

It is with great sadness that the Dryden Fire Service and the City of Dryden mourn the passing of Past Assistant District Chief Jim Osborne.

Jim began his firefighting career with the Barclay Fire Department. Following the amalgamation of the Township of Barclay with the City of Dryden, Jim continued his service as a proud member of the Dryden Fire Service family.

Over the course of 32 years of dedicated service, Jim demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his community, his fellow firefighters, and the fire service. He served alongside generations of firefighters and played an important role in shaping the department and the traditions that continue today.

Jim was more than a firefighter and officer. He was a dedicated community servant, leader, mentor, and friend. His pride in serving the Township of Barclay and the City of Dryden was evident throughout his many years of service.

The Dryden Fire Service extends its deepest condolences to Jim’s family, friends, fellow current firefighters, and retired members who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.

Jim helped pave the way for future generations of first responders and embodied what it truly means to serve your community with pride, dedication, and commitment.

His service may have ended, but his legacy will continue through the firefighters who follow in his footsteps.

Thank you, Chief Osborne, for 32 years of service to our community. Your dedication and legacy will not be forgotten.

Rest easy, Chief. We’ll take it from here.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 11am at the Royal Canadian Legion Dryden Branch 63, with Mardi Plomp officiating. Interment will follow in the Dryden Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Dryden Go-Getters, 84 St Charles St., Dryden, ON, P8N 1L3 or the O.P.P. Youth Foundation, 777 Memorial Avenue, Orillia, ON L3V 7V3 or through Aurora Funeral Services.

At approximately 1:46 a.m. on August 31,2026, Dryden Fire Service was dispatched to a detached garage fire on Wilde Street.

Upon arrival, crews found the garage fully involved, with fire extending to nearby exposure structures, including the adjacent residence and a neighbouring home. A working fire was declared.

Seventeen firefighters responded with four apparatus. Water was flowing within 11 minutes of the initial dispatch. Crews prioritized protecting the surrounding homes and successfully limited damage, allowing all occupants to return to their residences.

The detached garage and one vehicle were a total loss. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Dryden Fire Service returned to service at approximately 5:00 a.m.

For Immediate Release: Dryden Fire Service Achieves Superior Tanker Shuttle Service Accreditation

As of August 26, 2026 - Effective August 8, 2026, Dryden Fire Service has achieved Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation for alternative water supply for public fire protection

Thank you to Oxdrift Fire Team for supporting us with additional tanker trucks through the Provincial Mutual Aid Program, and the City of Dryden Water Department for the water supply.

Congratulations to the members of the Dryden Fire Service for being the first fire department in Northwestern Ontario to achieve this rating!

🔥 Restricted Fire Zone Lifted

The Restricted Fire Zone (RFZ) will be lifted at 12:01 a.m. on August 20, 2026.

As of 12:01 a.m., all Camp Fire Permits within the Municipality of Dryden will be reinstated.

The Dryden Fire Service reminds everyone to continue practicing safe burning and to follow all regulations outlined in By-Law 2021-36.

During this time, residents may notice increased emergency vehicle traffic running from Scott Street to Lyle Road. Firefighters will use emergency lights and sirens during this specific training. There is no emergency; please reduce speed and pull over for firefighters.

Note: Hydrants will be in use. While the water supply remains safe to use, there may be temporary low water pressure or discoloured water due to hydrant use.
