Vikings were in the Americas almost 500 years before Columbus arrived.
Did you know that Norse explorers set foot in the Americas almost half a millennium before Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic? 🤯⛵️
Scientists have officially confirmed that Vikings were active in Newfoundland, Canada, exactly in the year 1021. This marks the earliest precise date for European presence in the Americas! 🌎
So, how did they figure this out? The answer is out of this world—literally. 🌌
The evidence comes from L’Anse aux Meadows, the remains of a Viking settlement on Newfoundland’s northern coast. Researchers found three pieces of wood that had been cleanly cut with metal tools, which Indigenous people in that specific region did not use at the time. 🪓
To get the exact year, scientists looked to the stars. In 993 AD, an enormous solar storm struck Earth, leaving a massive spike of radioactive carbon in tree rings all over the world. Researchers found this exact cosmic signature inside the Viking-cut wood. By simply counting the tree rings from that solar storm marker out to the bark, all three pieces of wood gave the exact same answer: the trees were chopped down in 1021. 🌳✨
What were they doing there?
Archaeologists believe a small crew of around 100 Norse people stayed at the settlement for a relatively brief period. They likely used it as a base camp to gather timber and other vital resources to take back to Greenland. While they left very little behind, this single year in history was perfectly preserved by a solar storm for a thousand years. 🕰️
