Interesting to see that Robin Wall Kimmerer's 2024 book The Serviceberry is number nine on this week's Globe and Mail list of international non-fiction hardcover books! We have this book in the library. It "builds on many of the ideas in [Wall Kimmerer's previous book] Braiding Sweetgrass, which applies Indigenous knowledge and ideas about reciprocity to ecology and science."

The library is open 1:30 - 3:30 Monday through Saturday.
And don't forget about our Big Book Bonanza Sales taking place Sunday Sept 6 during the Blackberry Faire and Saturday Sept 12 at the library 1:30 - 3:30.

Sales are by donation and will go toward a much-needed renovation of the library.

Did you know that the DD Community Library has a substantive collection of books by authors who‘ve appeared at the DI Readers and Writers Festival over the years? That’s something- not nothing!

The library is open daily except Sundays and holidays from 1:30-3:30.

It’s no mystery that many Denman Islanders love to read mysteries! We have an excellent mystery collection at the DD library and we have just winnowed all the very “well-loved” mysteries out of the collection and into seven boxes ready for our upcoming sales Sept 6 and 12. That’s just the latest addition to the stack of mysteries that will be for sale! Come sleuth out a selection for your collection on those days - 1:30 - 3:30.

Look what I (Stephanie Slater) found while reviewing the collection for books to be removed! The Egg and I was published in 1945 and made into a movie in 1947. Amazon describes it as “A Beloved Literary Treasure and Heartwarming Memoir About Life on a Pacific Northwest Farm.” The delight for me is that it had belonged to my late parents, Bill (WR) and Queenie (QM) Slater!

This book was first signed out of the DD library in late 1988 and was last signed out in 2014. It has now come home with me but many other books will be available at our library fundraising sales on Sunday Sept 6 and Saturday Sept 12, 1:30 -3:30 at the library.

We are still gratefully accepting book donations during library hours (1:30 - 3:30 Mondays through Saturdays). If you want to leave them after hours please be sure they are in a box or bag or call for pickup (Stephanie 5-3339).

No magazines or textbooks please.

At the height of summer we are increasingly faced with the danger of wildfires. It’s a good time to read Fire Weather by John Vaillant.

“In May 2016, Fort McMurray, the hub of Canada's petroleum industry and America's biggest foreign supplier, was overrun by wildfire. The multi-billion-dollar disaster melted vehicles, turned entire neighborhoods into firebombs, and drove 88,000 people from their homes in a single afternoon. Through the lens of this apocalyptic conflagration—the wildfire equivalent of Hurricane Katrina—John Vaillant warns that this was not a unique event but a shocking preview of what we must prepare for in a hotter, more flammable world.”

You can find Fire Weather at the DD Community Library along with other works by Vaillant. Come to the library daily - except Sundays and holidays - 1:30-3:30.

One way to be happy is to come to the DD Community Library and borrow a great book (like A Way to be Happy by Caroline Adderson). We’re open Mondays through Saturdays 1:30-3:30.

Thank you to those who bought books at our first Big Book Bonanza at the market on Saturday. This is a fundraiser for our volunteer-run community library and we will have two more sales: Sunday, Sept 6 (at the Blackberry Faire) and Saturday Sept 12 at the library 1:30 to 3:30. We are still gratefully accepting donations of books. Those not suitable for the library collection will be on the sale tables. We will have lots of new books at these upcoming sales!

Sales are by donation and we are happy to accept e-transfer payments to [email protected]

The library is open 1:30-3:30 Mondays through Saturdays except statutory holidays. If these times aren’t convenient for book donations, call Stephanie at 5-3339.

Is your book-buying mojo messed up by the cancellation of the annual DCA book sale this year? Never fear! Our library is stepping into the gap with three book sales: Sat. Aug 1 at the market, Sun. Sept 6 (Blackberry Faire day) and Sat. Sept 12. The latter two will take place in front of the library at the DI Community Hall between 1:30 - 3:30.

We have so many books for sale! We're putting out our entire collection of trade paperbacks (the small softcover books) and we have many donations that aren't suitable for the collection but which will be a great treasure for a personal library! These include books on jewellery making, gardening, cooking, art history - and so many more!

Come early, come often as we will be adding books for each sale.
