It’s almost here! Our 2026 Firefighters Ball is happening THIS SATURDAY, September 12th! 🎉

✨ Please note: The Firefighters Ball is a FORMAL EVENT. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone dressed up and ready for a great evening!

We still have 9 DOUBLE TICKETS remaining for the full Supper & Dance at $80 per double ticket.

Not joining us for supper? No problem! Dance-only tickets are now available for just $10 per person! 💃🕺

🚒 Labour Day Weekend is Here! 🇨🇦

For a lot of us, Labour Day weekend is that last big taste of summer. One more trip to the cabin, one more campfire, one more run on the ATV or boat, or simply a chance to slow down and enjoy some time with family and friends.

From all of us at Deer Lake Fire Rescue, we hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable long weekend!

If you’re heading out, take the extra few seconds to do things safely. Buckle up, wear the helmet or life jacket, keep an eye on the fire, and if you’re having a few drinks, leave the driving to someone else.

Most importantly, enjoy the weekend and look out for one another. ❤️

And while many people get to enjoy a well-earned long weekend, a special thank-you goes out to all of the first responders, healthcare workers, essential workers and others who will still be on the job keeping our communities running.

From an emergency-response perspective, getting accurate information to the public quickly matters. Just as important is making sure that information comes from an official source.

🔥 YOUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE. YOU CALL 911. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Most people will hopefully never find out.

But here’s what those first few minutes can actually look like.

**0:00 — You call 911.**
While the dispatcher is gathering information from you, the emergency response is already beginning.

**1:00 — Our pagers start going off.**
All over Deer Lake, firefighters stop whatever they’re doing and head for the fire hall or the scene.

**3:00 — The hall starts coming alive.**
Gear goes on. Trucks are started. Information is coming in. Crews are getting assignments.

**5:00 — The first truck is rolling. 🚒**
On the way, we’re already thinking ahead.

Is everyone out?
Where is the fire?
Is anyone trapped?
Where's our water supply?
What are the biggest hazards?
Who is doing what?

Then we arrive.

And while you might see firefighters getting off a truck, there are already a dozen things happening almost simultaneously.

A 360° assessment of the building.
Hose lines being deployed.
Water supply being established.
Crews assigned to fire attack and search.
Utilities and hazards identified.
Accountability established.
More resources requested if they're needed.

And all of it has one priority above everything else:

Life safety.

Those first few minutes can feel like absolute chaos to someone watching from the outside.

But they aren't random.

They're the reason we train.

Again.
And again.
And again.

So when somebody in our community is having one of the worst days of their life, we don't have to figure out what to do.

We already know.

🚒 WHEN THE PAGER GOES OFF…

Most people see the fire trucks heading down the road.

What you don’t see is everything that happens in the minutes before.

When our pagers sound, our members could be anywhere.

At home eating supper.
At work.
Mowing the lawn.
Out with their family.
Half asleep at 2:00 in the morning.

Whatever we’re doing gets put on hold.

We make our way to the fire hall, gear up, get the trucks rolling, and start processing the information we have. Sometimes knowing exactly what we’re heading into, and sometimes knowing VERY little.

🔥 Structure fire
🚗 Motor vehicle collision
🌲 Wildland fire
🩺 Medical emergency
⛽ Fuel leak
⚡ Downed power lines
🚨 Alarm activation
🪜 Technical Rescue

Every single call is different.

And while the trucks are responding, there’s already a lot happening inside them. Radio traffic, route planning, assigning jobs for when we arrive on scene, discussing hazards and preparing for what we might find when we arrive.

That’s why training matters so much.

We don’t get to choose when an emergency happens, what kind it will be, or how complicated it might become.

We just have to be ready when it does.

So the next time you see one of our trucks heading through Deer Lake with the lights and sirens on, know there’s a crew inside already thinking several steps ahead.

And somewhere behind them are more firefighters making their way to the hall or to the scene.

Your neighbours.

Your coworkers.

People you probably pass at the grocery store every week.

💙 A huge thank you to KFC Deer Lake! 🍗🚒

A big shoutout to Omar and the entire team at KFC Deer Lake for an incredibly thoughtful surprise this week.

During one of our regular training evenings, Omar stopped by with a meal for our firefighters as a simple way of saying thank you. It wasn't for an event or anything special, just a genuine act of kindness and appreciation.

Gestures like this remind us how lucky we are to serve such a supportive community. Our members volunteer countless hours training so we're ready when our neighbours need us, and knowing our community has our backs means more than you know.

From all of us at Deer Lake Fire Rescue, thank you, Omar, and everyone at KFC Deer Lake, for your generosity and for thinking of our team. We truly appreciate it!

🚒 What firefighters wish everyone knew before calling 911.

First of all...

If you think it's an emergency, call.

We would much rather respond to something that turns out to be minor than have someone wait too long because they were worried about "bothering us."

That said, there are a few things that can really help us help you faster:

📍 **Know your location.** If you're on a trail, cabin road, or unfamiliar area, try to identify landmarks, road names, or GPS coordinates if you can.

🏠 **Make sure your civic number is visible.** It helps every emergency service find you faster.

🚪 **If it's safe to do so, have someone meet responders outside.** A flashlight at night or someone at the end of the driveway can save valuable time.

👨‍👩‍👧 **Tell the dispatcher exactly what you see—not what you think is happening.** "There's smoke coming from the basement window" is more helpful than "My house is on fire" if you're unsure.

🐶 **Let us know if there are pets, propane tanks, oxygen cylinders, or anyone who may still be inside.** That information changes how we respond.

❤️ And one last thing...

Please don't ever apologize for calling 911.

If you're genuinely concerned that someone is in danger, that's exactly what the emergency system is there for. We'd rather arrive and find everything is okay than have someone hesitate when help was needed.

🔥 What's in your vehicle emergency kit? 🚗

Whether you're heading across town, out to a cabin, or taking a trip across the island, you never know when an unexpected breakdown or delay could happen.

A few simple items can make a big difference while you wait for help:

✅ Flashlight (with extra batteries)
✅ First aid kit
✅ Booster cables
✅ Blanket or warm clothing
✅ Bottled water and non-perishable snacks
✅ Phone charger or power bank
✅ Reflective triangles or road flares
✅ Basic tools
✅ Tire pressure gauge and portable inflator

These items don't take up much room, but they can make an uncomfortable situation much safer for you and your family.

Take five minutes this week to check your vehicle. Hopefully you'll never need these items—but if you do, you'll be glad they're there.

Stay prepared. Stay safe.
