Very cool 😎 that NPD and Rolphton get a shout out today by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the 64th anniversary of electrical power being produced from a CANDU reactor. ⚛️⚡️💡

On this day electricity began flowing from the first ever CANDU reactor at the Nuclear Power Demonstration reactor (NPD) in Rolphton, Canada.

CANDU stands for Canadian (where it was invented) Deuterium-Uranium, a type of power reactor that uses heavy water as a coolant and moderator and natural uranium as fuel, which is unique as most reactors use enriched uranium dioxide. CANDU reactors have a comprehensive safety system that can be tested while the reactor is operating.

Today, CANDU reactors are used in many countries as a source of clean energy. Because of the reactor’s unique features, the IAEA set up a special regulators group programme to improve operational safety, enhance regulatory effectiveness and maintain the necessary knowledge.

Enjoy fresh flowers? Consider helping out one of our local businesses which is finding themselves in a bind due to the extended power outage.

Friends, I need your help.

Due to the extended power outage, many of the flowers I had stored in the fridge to last me over the next 4 weeks have opened.

This means they won't store. They need to be used immediately.

This is quite a loss, especially because the season has been so delayed; these stored flowers would have helped get me to the season's first harvest.

But the loss can be minimized with your help.

The stand will be open Sunday (tomorrow), Monday and Tuesday. From 10am-7pm. There will be something there for every budget.

$10 bunches. $20 bouquets. $30 arrangements.

These flower don't have to go to waste.

Do you know someone in need of cheering up? Have a corner at home that needs brightening? Birthday coming up? Or an anniversary? Or just to treat yourself.

Come by the flower stand and help us get these flowers into good hands.

36 Wolfe Ave, Deep River.

Please share this post if you can to help get the word out.

I sincerely appreciate this community.

❤️❤️❤️

Just want to give a well-deserved shout-out today to our highly-skilled and well-equipped Deep River Fire Department who responded to not just one, but at least 4 brush fires 🔥 in town on this hot VERY WINDY dry spring day.

We are extremely fortunate to have such an amazing, dedicated and well-trained team serving our community. In fact after mopping up the second🔥 at the ski-hill after 3 hours of hot work on a hill, the team informed me they were doing scheduled training tonight.

There are wires on the ground so please stay away from the area while we wait for Hydro One crews to arrive and investigate. A tree fell on a hydro wire, dropping wires and starting a brush fire which, with the high winds today, could have been quite devastating for our community if not spotted quickly, reported and jumped on. So I also want to thank the residents who saw the smoke and quickly took action reporting it.

It takes a community and we have a great one!

For anyone interested in "the basics" of nuclear science, a great description by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

Atoms make up everything — from the air we breathe to the water we drink; plants, animals, and even us.

Most atoms on Earth are stable, with a balanced composition of particles in their nucleus. However, in some types of unstable atoms, the composition of protons and neutrons in the nucleus does not allow particles to be held together. The atom then ‘decays’, and releases energy in the form of radiation. When safely harnessed, this can provide many benefits, including clean energy, medical treatments, and much more.

Read our to learn more about the atom: https://atoms.iaea.org/4pov6A4
