Having read the full article in the NRT, my initial reaction is that while the Community Improvement Plan (CIP) is important to long-term planning, it is just one piece of a much larger plan that needs to address Deep River's critical infrastructure. Personally, I have more questions than answers at this time.

It would be difficult for me to support any changes described in the plan without significantly more information and discussion. From some of the feedback I've read on social media, this appears to be another issue that requires improved two-way communication between the Town and the residents.

Deep River’s Community Improvement Plan (CIP) envisions large-scale changes to the downtown core, but those changes won’t happen overnight. That was the message presented to town council last week …

With October upon us already, the fall colours are in full force, however that also means "that green bill" has started to show up in Deep River mailboxes...

I am of course referring to the semi-annual Water and Sewer utility bill. With the water tower undergoing a multi-million dollar refurbishment, summer-long water usage restrictions, three recent occurrences of complete water system outage, and a multitude of water quality issues, residents may be wondering what they are actually getting for their $1300/year Water and Sewer service.

My perspective, from what I have read and heard over the past few years, is that Deep River's water and sewer infrastructure has suffered from long-term under-investment that is now culminating in a potentially unmanageable refurbishment cost.

If elected to Council, gaining a deep and thorough understanding of the past, present, and future of our water and sewer infrastructure will be one of my top priorities.

Having dealt with managing aging and under-invested IT infrastructure, I can tell you there is no quick fix! Funding is only part of the challenge - if there is no detailed plan that is backed and supported by all relevant stakeholders, any available funding can easily be wasted.

I will advocate for and support the development of an achievable and realistic long-term strategy and plan to improve our water and sewer infrastructure.

Hello Deep River

My name is Tom Vaughan and I am running for Councillor in the Town of Deep River on October 24, 2022.

My wife and I moved to the Upper Ottawa Valley in January 2006 where I started working for AECL as a Data Centre Administrator in the Information Technology department.

We purchased our home in Deep River in June 2007 and are currently raising two amazing daughters, 9 and 11, in this beautiful town.

While I may be new to municipal politics, my 17 year career in Information Technology at AECL and CNL has allowed me to develop the leadership and governance skills that I believe are integral to the role of a municipal Councillor. I believe that trust is earned through open and honest dialog that is accompanied by action and accountability.

Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing my thoughts on key issues that I believe Deep River will face over the next four years.

Thank you all for your support and I would love to hear from residents on what issues matter to you. I can be reached here through Facebook or via email at [email protected]
