πŸ’œ A Beautiful Day for Walk Strong Halifax πŸ’œ

This past Sunday, DeWolf Park gave us the perfect setting for ALS Walk Strong Halifax.

The sun was shining, the water was sparkling, and our community showed up once again with so much heart. It was a beautiful day filled with support, remembrance, connection, and care for people living with ALS and their families.

We are so grateful to Mark Hustins, our 2026 Walk Ambassador, for making the trip from Yarmouth to be with us. Mark shared powerful words of motivation and reminded everyone why Walk Strong matters so deeply.

A heartfelt thank you as well to our board member, Sam Beaton, for speaking on behalf of the Society and for organizing a wonderful group of Dalhousie MBA students to come out and support the day.

We also want to give a very special thank you to Donna Sutherland and Kelsey Weshnoweski for volunteering with us. Your help on the day made such a difference, and we truly could not have had the successful event we did without your support.

Most of all, thank you to our incredible community. To everyone who walked, donated, volunteered, shared, sponsored, encouraged, or simply showed up, please know how much it means.

Your support helps keep our doors open. It helps us provide equipment, care, guidance, and connection to people living with ALS and their families when they need it most.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping us make more moments possible. πŸ’œ

πŸ’œ Ready to Make More Moments This Weekend πŸ’œ

The van is packed, the supplies are loaded, and we are ready for our third Walk Strong weekend of June.

This weekend, we are heading to:
Belledune Walk Strong
Saturday, June 20
Saint Gabriel’s Parish

Halifax Walk Strong
Sunday, June 21
DeWolf Park

We cannot wait to see our communities come together once again in support of people living with ALS and their families.

Every walk is a chance to honour loved ones, raise awareness, support one another, and make moments that matter. From the first box packed to the final step on walk day, every part of this weekend is powered by community. πŸ’œ

πŸ’œ Finding Simplicity in the Everyday πŸ’œ

A recent ALS News Today column by Dagmar Munn beautifully reflects on something many people living with ALS and their caregivers understand deeply: even the simplest tasks can come with extra planning, extra steps, and unexpected trade-offs.

In the column, Dagmar writes about looking for humour and meaning in the everyday absurdities of life with ALS, from trying to simplify a hobby to navigating daily routines that are anything but simple.

Her reflection is a powerful reminder that living with ALS often means constantly adapting, problem-solving, and protecting energy for what matters most.

It also reminds us why support, equipment, accessibility, and community care are so important. Every tool, every helping hand, and every moment of understanding can help make daily life a little easier.

Thank you to Dagmar for sharing such an honest and thoughtful perspective. πŸ’œ

For columnist Dagmar Munn, no task with ALS is mindless, and each one comes with a trade-off she must evaluate and accept.

πŸ’œ Moncton Walked Strong in the Rain πŸ’œ

Despite our pleas for good weather, Saturday had other plans. But a little rain did not stop the Moncton community from showing up for ALS Walk Strong at Centennial Park!

Despite the weather, we had a wonderful turnout filled with support, care, and community spirit. Together, approximately $8,000 was raised on the day of the event alone. This does not include the funds already raised online in Moncton, and it truly shows the incredible amount of support behind this community.

A very special thank you goes to our long-time supporter Al Kavanaugh, who has raised over $12,000 and counting this year alone in honour of his friend, Ken Lamey. Al has been supporting this walk with incredible dedication for more than 20 years, and we are so grateful.

We also want to thank our board members Tammy Landry and Mary Jane Foley, who support our walks in so many ways, from setup to showing up on the day and helping make these events possible.

A heartfelt thank you as well to Pam Van Egmond, who has been a long-time community supporter of Walk Strong Moncton. Pam secured amazing sponsorships for this year’s event, including pizza from Vito’s, water bottles from Sobeys, and wonderful draw prizes for participants at the end of the day.

We are also incredibly grateful to the RBC team, who brought 10 volunteers to help with setup, event support, and teardown. Their support helped make the day run smoothly and efficiently, and RBC also contributed a generous $1,500 grant to the walk.

Thank you to every walker, donor, volunteer, sponsor, family member, and supporter who helped make Moncton such a meaningful day. This is what community looks like, and we are so thankful to see it on full display.

We already have the park booked for next year, and we cannot wait to see everyone again. πŸ’œ

πŸ’œ With Thanks to Brookfield and the ALS Warriors πŸ’œ

We are so grateful for the continued support of the Brookfield community and the ALS Warriors.

A heartfelt thank you to Katherine Carter, who coordinated the Brookfield ALS Walk Strong event again this year in honour of Judy. This year’s walk held an especially meaningful place in Katherine’s family’s heart, as it took place exactly one year after her mom’s celebration of life on June 7, 2025.

While some people were not able to attend, there was still a strong and meaningful turnout, filled with care, remembrance, and support for the ALS community.

We are also grateful to hear that Purdy Auto Sales will be making a donation toward the team at the end of the month, with support from another local business also in the works.

Thank you to Katherine, the ALS Warriors, and everyone in Brookfield who walked, donated, supported, and helped make this day possible. Your continued care means so much. πŸ’œ

What a beautiful day for ALS Walk Strong Saint John. πŸ’œ

Thank you to everyone who volunteered, walked, donated, and helped fill Market Square and Harbour Passage with so much support for the ALS community. Seeing Saint John come together in purple and ending the day with the Fort Howe sign lit in support was truly special.

A big thank you as well to our long-time Saint John Walk coordinators, Patti Slipp and Chris Magee, for the care, time, and heart they continue to put into making this event such a meaningful day for the community.

We are so grateful to everyone who helped make this day possible. πŸ’œ

πŸ’œ Accepting help is not always easy πŸ’œ

When you are living with ALS, accepting help can feel hard.

You may not want to inconvenience anyone.
You may not want to feel like a burden.
You may not want extra attention.

But sometimes, accepting help is also accepting love.

When a friend or family member offers to step in, it is often their way of saying, β€œI care about you, and I want to be here for you.” If the situation were reversed, chances are you would be the first to help them too.

It is also important to remember that caregivers cannot do everything alone. Even small acts of support can give them a chance to rest, breathe, and carry a little less on their shoulders.

And when someone helps, they are learning too. They are learning how to show up, how to care, and how to support others in the future.

Accepting help is not giving up.
Sometimes, it is simply letting others love you well. πŸ’œ
