Happy Father's Day to all of the fathers and father figures throughout our community. Thank you for your love, care, strength, and dedication.

Our thoughts are with all fathers who are unable to be with their children, and all children who are unable to be with their fathers, because of criminalization, incarceration, and other injustices.

Care, compassion, empathy, and connection are essential for breaking these cycles, fostering healing, preventing future harm, and reuniting families, and we advocate for spaces, programs, and policies that support this each day.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19th, 1865, the day that enslaved African Americans were freed across the United States. This day holds significance in Canada, as our histories are deeply intertwined.

Juneteenth is also a crucial opportunity to build awareness of the present-day mass incarceration of all Black populations throughout North America, often referred to as “Slavery by Another Name”. The Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia is committed to ongoingly educating ourselves and others on this pipeline, along with advocating for racial justice and alternatives to incarceration.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Geordie William Whyte, at the age of 40, on June 11th, 2026. The loss of Geordie, who was very much connected to the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia family, leaves us all with heavy hearts.

Born in Little Pond, Cape Breton Island, Geordie was the second eldest son of George Whyte, whose love knew no bounds. Aside from his father, Geordie leaves behind many loved ones who will forever feel the weight of his loss: four sisters, Sarah, Patricia—who has been part of our Elizabeth Fry family for years, Maggie, and Rachel; two brothers, Lenny and Stanley; many, many nieces and nephews; his life partner, Alicia; best friends, Aaron and Jay; and so many friends in Cape Breton and his second home of Dartmouth. Predeceased by and waiting for Geordie in heaven are his beloved fur nephew, Karl, close friend Ally, and his paternal grandparents.

Geordie was a dedicated worker who contributed many years of service as a driller at Sandy Ross Well Servicing. He will be remembered for his kindness, gentle heart, and the deep, genuine way he loved his community. In particular, his bond with Patricia, his Irish twin, was unbreakable and their love and connection will live on, even in his absence.

Never forgetting his rural roots, Geordie loved skiing, fishing, and spending time in the woods whenever possible. He had an unwavering love for his family and animals and spent as much time with them as he could. His favourite food was blueberry pie. From his family, “In his memory, take a moment to appreciate the woods, rivers, lakes, and sea, and next time you eat blueberry pie, remember Geordie’s smiling face.”

In Geordie’s loving memory, on behalf of his family, please consider donating to the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia or the Elizabeth Fry Society of Northwestern Ontario—two organizations that were close to his heart.

Our hearts are with Geordie’s family, friends, loved ones, and all who were touched by his kindness, gentle nature, and light.

Naiomi Metallic is a Mi’kmaw Lawyer and Professor from the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation.

Naiomi works to support Indigenous rights, self-government, and justice. She studied law at Dalhousie University, the University of Ottawa, and Osgoode Hall Law School, and later worked as a clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada. She is now an Associate Professor and Chancellor’s Chair in Aboriginal Law and Policy at Dalhousie University. Her work focuses on Indigenous laws, treaty rights, governance, and improving Canadian laws and policies.

Naiomi is known for promoting “legislative reconciliation,” which means changing laws to better recognize and respect Indigenous rights. Through her research and advocacy, she draws attention to unfair treatment of Indigenous peoples in the legal system, including higher rates of policing and incarceration. Her work helps advance social justice, Indigenous self-determination, and reconciliation in Canada.

Naiomi—thank you for your immense contributions to justice, equity, and human rights for all.

Please follow us throughout the rest of Indigenous History Month for more features on incredible Indigenous change-makers from Mi'kma'ki and beyond.

Every time that Gwen Frankton learns about another of her husband's alleged victims, she says "It's like a knife wound to my heart. It's profoundly painful."

Stephen Lowe, who was arrested back in February, is facing 79 charges including harassment, uttering threats, and possessing and publishing obscene material and child sexual abuse material. The case involves AI-generated n**e deepfakes, portraying at least 25—and potentially more than 50—women in violent, exploitative images that include r**e, torture, bo***ge, and kidnapping. Photos of these women were taken from their social media profiles, manipulated into these images, and published online.

Frankton, who has been married to Lowe for 21 years and now plans to divorce him, is deeply disturbed, shocked, and says there were no signs—rather, they had a loving marriage in their community of Maitland, Nova Scotia. Frankton has been speaking out in support of the women involved, and additionally, wants to have conversations about those in her situation—people who are not formally victims, but experience heavy, life-altering impacts.

Kylee Nunn, a Program Manager and Advocate with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia, would like to see the mandate of Victim Services expanded: "There's not a lot of space to look at the impact of violence and everyone who is impacted and harmed by instances of violence because of the binary nature of our justice system.”

Please find the full story from CBC on their website.

Our hearts are with all those who have experienced this violence and feel the impacts of it. We stand with you.
