Cumulative Effects Project - Building and Enhancing Capacity
With financial support from the Indigenous Centre for Cumulative Effects (ICCE), APC is currently leading an exciting project, titled "Cumulative Effects in Atlantic Indigenous Communities", which aims to help build the technical and scientific capacity of Indigenous communities in Atlantic Canada to address cumulative effects. The Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) defines cumulative effects as “the impacts on the biophysical and socio-economic environment that results from the incremental effects of a development when added to other past, present, and reasonably foreseeable future developments, regardless of what agency or person undertakes such other developments. Cumulative impacts can result from individually minor but collectively significant actions taking place over a period of time.”
This project has three main components: (1) Conducting a literature review and primary research, (2) Holding community workshops and engagement sessions, and (3) Developing an online cumulative effects information-sharing platform for Atlantic Indigenous communities. The primary research involves conducting interviews with Indigenous knowledge-holders in Atlantic Canada to summarize cumulative effects being observed in the region, as well as to guide us towards identifying relevant and useful resources, tools, and practical solutions to help address cumulative effects. Community workshops and engagement sessions will be held in late April and in late June to update communities on the overall progress of the project and the findings of our primary research, to discuss what would be most beneficial for communities moving forward, to create a space for knowledge-sharing, voicing concerns and spreading awareness of cumulative effects, as well as to encourage collaboration on current and future cumulative effects initiatives and projects.
APC plans to continue and expand upon this project over the next year, with a focus on managing and maintaining the online information-sharing platform and creating opportunities to further educate communities on cumulative effects.
