NEWS RELEASE: East Kootenay FireSmart Program Recognizes Sand Creek Lions Club for Wildfire Mitigation Efforts (Posted 06.16.26)

The East Kootenay FireSmart Program is recognizing the Sand Creek Lions Club in Jaffray for its outstanding volunteer efforts to support FireSmart activities in the community.

On Sunday, June 14, 2026, during the Lions Club year-end BBQ held at the Jaffray Community Hall, the East Kootenay FireSmart Program thanked the service group for stepping up to assist with mitigation work in areas they identified as needing attention.

The Sand Creek Lions Club, along with RDEK Local FireSmart Representative Jessica Chalmers, helped complete cleanup work around the seniors’ residence complex in Jaffray, improving the area by reducing vegetation, debris, and other combustible materials that can contribute to wildfire risk. The group also assisted at a local senior’s home where there was significant blowdown and debris that the resident was unable to manage independently.

“These kinds of community-led efforts are what make FireSmart successful,” says FireSmart Coordinator Sloane More. “The Sand Creek Lions Club saw where help was needed and took action. Their work not only supported wildfire risk reduction but also helped connect people in the community through practical, meaningful service.”

In recognition of the group’s efforts and to support future mitigation projects, the East Kootenay FireSmart Program donated a pole saw to the Sand Creek Lions Club.

The FireSmart program relies on strong community partnerships to help residents reduce wildfire risk around homes, neighbourhoods, and community facilities. Volunteer contributions like these play an important role in building safer, more resilient communities across the East Kootenay.

The Water Quality Advisory has been RESCINDED for the Edgewater Water System and regular water consumption can resume for all users on the water system.

The Advisory had been in effect since late May following increased turbidity levels in the midst of spring runoff. Those turbidity levels have now dropped and lab results have been returned, so the Advisory has been lifted.
