Cranbrook RCMP are thanking the public for their patience and cooperation following a police incident on August 31, 2026, that prompted road closures and a large police presence near Canadian Rockies International airport.

Early yesterday afternoon, Cranbrook RCMP received a report of an individual in distress. Public safety quickly became the priority, and a wide range of specialized resources were called in to support frontline officers.

Throughout the incident, Cranbrook RCMP worked closely with specialized RCMP units, including the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), Police Dog Services (PDS), Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), and Critical Incident Command personnel. Officers from Kimberley RCMP also assisted in ensuring a safe outcome.

"This incident demonstrates the value of specialized policing resources and the strong collaboration between local officers and support units," said Cst. Munro, Media Relations Officer, Cranbrook RCMP. "Our primary objective was to ensure the safety of the public, our officers, and the individual in crisis. Thanks to the professionalism and coordinated efforts of everyone involved, the situation was resolved peacefully."

The Cranbrook RCMP is proud to recognize Constable Hanna and Constable Henneberry as recipients of this year's Alexa Award, a distinguished road safety honour that recognizes police officers who demonstrate exceptional dedication to keeping British Columbia's roads safe through impaired driving enforcement.

Named in memory of Alexa Middelaer, a four-year-old girl who was tragically killed by an impaired driver in Delta, B.C., in 2008, the award serves as a powerful reminder of the devastating consequences of impaired driving. Alexa's legacy not only helped inspire the creation of British Columbia's Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) program, but continues to motivate law enforcement officers throughout the province in their efforts to prevent similar tragedies.

The Alexa Award is presented to officers who have gone above and beyond in impaired driving enforcement, making a measurable impact on public safety by identifying and removing impaired drivers before lives are put at risk.

Constables Hanna and Henneberry have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to protecting the public through proactive enforcement and vigilance on our roadways. Their dedication reflects the highest standards of policing and serves as a testament to the RCMP's ongoing commitment to reducing impaired driving and preventing serious injury and loss of life.

"Constables Hanna and Henneberry have shown exceptional dedication to road safety throughout the year," said Sgt. Stu Hert."Their recognition with the Alexa Award is well deserved and highlights the important work that our officers do every day to identify and remove impaired drivers from our roads. Their efforts have undoubtedly contributed to making our community safer and helping prevent tragedy before it occurs."

RCMP members will continue conducting proactive patrols, impaired driving enforcement, and roadside checks throughout the community to help ensure the safety of all road users.

"Our officers are actively out on the roads looking for impaired drivers," added Sgt. Hert. "The safest choice is always to plan ahead. If you intend to consume alcohol or drugs, arrange a safe ride home before you go out.โ€

The Cranbrook RCMP reminds motorists that impaired driving carries significant consequences, including immediate driving prohibitions, vehicle impoundments, substantial fines, and potential criminal charges.

Anyone who observes a suspected impaired driver is encouraged to call 9-1-1 and report the vehicle description, location, and direction of travel as soon as it is safe to do so.

On the evening of May 13th Police received multiple reports of individuals being shot with a BB gun. The victims in both instances were able to provide a clear vehicle description. Police located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop that resulted in the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of gel/BB-style guns. The suspect was identified and was issued an Undertaking with 2 charges of assault with a weapon and multiple conditions including a curfew.

Our officers booked 43 individuals into Cranbrook cells including 5 individuals arrested on outstanding warrants, 7 individuals remanded into custody after bail hearings, and 3 individuals held for breaching court ordered conditions.

In addition to calls for service officers were also out conducting radar enforcement in school zones, curfew checks and proactive patrols which resulted in 3 separate 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRPโ€™s) being issued.

Our officers also had the pleasure of participating in some great community events throughout the month including multiple bike registration events, the Kootenay Childrenโ€™s Festival, school visits, detachment tours and our Coffee with Cop events.
