Cranbrook was established as a townsite in 1898 with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway and subsequently incorporated as a municip

ality in 1905. The city resides within the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa (pronounced “tu-na-ha”) First Nation and is blessed with some of the most spectacular scenery to be found.

Have you completed the City’s 2027 Budget Citizen Survey yet?

Public input will help the incoming Mayor and Council better understand community priorities and make informed decisions about future services and budget allocations. This year’s survey also asks for feedback on community safety, policing, City services, and potential locations for the proposed Cranbrook Kimberley Hospice House.

Effective today (September 14, 2026), water restrictions for those residents on Cranbrook’s water system return to Stage 1 until further notice.

This means that even numbered properties may water Monday, Thursday, and Saturday; odd numbered properties may water Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday between 5am and 10am or between 8pm and 11pm – not both. There is no watering on Wednesdays.

An important reminder that starting today (September 14, 2026), a portion of Victoria Avenue between 8th Street North and Kootenay Street will be reduced to two lanes for a three week period to allow for the tie in of water, sewer, and storm sewer infrastructure for a new apartment build at 2000 8th Street North.

These temporary traffic changes will be in effect 24/7 for the next three weeks. Please watch for, follow and obey all signage in place and any directions from traffic control personnel while travelling through this portion of Victoria Avenue. Construction is just one of the many activities involving roadside worksites. Please slow down and watch for roadside workers. Drivers are encouraged to detour around this area wherever possible.

There will be two consecutive overnights toward the end of this three-week period when Victoria Avenue will be completely closed to all traffic to allow for necessary paving work to return the street to normal. Those dates have not been confirmed yet. We will share information ahead of these dates well in advance.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our local drivers, residents, and businesses around this project site while this work is completed.

This project, being developed by Colbrook Properties, is to be a 5-storey, 49-unit housing project for independent seniors.

Effective on Monday, September 14, 2026, water restrictions for those residents on Cranbrook’s water system return to Stage 1 until further notice.

“With the precipitation the area has received over the last several days, and lower water consumption we’ve been seeing, Phillips Reservoir has recovered and water is spilling over the spillway again,” says Jason Perrault, Deputy Director of Public Works. “We feel comfortable with moving the water restrictions back to Stage 1.”

Even with the shift back to Stage 1 water restrictions, it remains crucial that we as a community continue to work together to protect and conserve our City’s precious water supply, by continuing to water wisely and only using the water you need.
