🚒 Wildfire Training Exercise – Saturday, May 30, 2026 🚒

On Saturday, May 30 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, multiple Cowichan Valley fire departments along with the BC Wildfire Service will be participating in a large-scale wildfire interface training exercise in the Cowichan Bay area.

Participating departments include:

🔥 Shawnigan Lake
🔥 Malahat
🔥 Mill Bay
🔥 Cowichan Bay
🔥 Duncan
🔥 Sahtlam
🔥 Ladysmith
🔥 North Oyster
🔥 BC Wildfire Service

Residents may notice emergency vehicles, personnel, traffic cones, and simulated wildfire response activities in the following areas:

📍 Falcon Crescent
📍 Wilmot Road
📍 Galdwell Road
📍 Rondeault Road
📍 Hillbank Road

This important training exercise helps ensure local fire departments and partner agencies are prepared to work together effectively during a real wildfire emergency.

Please do not be alarmed and help crews safely complete their training by obeying signage, slowing down in the area, and giving personnel and apparatus plenty of space.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to keep our communities safe and prepared.

05/15/2026

Effective on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 12 p.m. (noon), the Category 1 campfire prohibition will be rescinded throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. Category 2 and Category 3 open burning will remain prohibited.
The Category 1 campfire prohibition was initially implemented due to a combination of elevated wildfire risk factors, including:
• Prolonged hot and dry conditions;
• Rising fire weather indices;
• Elevated incidence of human-caused wildfires; and
• Early season operational capacity.
Current and forecast conditions have since shifted, bringing cooler temperatures, improved humidity values and an overall reduction in wildfire hazard throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. Because of this, Category 1 campfires will be once again permitted under the Coastal Fire Centre jurisdiction.
Anyone choosing to light a Category 1 campfire must do so responsibly and in accordance with Section 20 of the Wildfire Regulation:
• Do not burn in windy conditions
• Establish and maintain a fuel break
• Do not leave the fire unattended
• Ensure the fire is fully extinguished before leaving the area
• Carry out fire control immediately and/or report the fire if it spreads beyond the established fuel break
Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre's jurisdiction in addition to the following activities and equipment:
• Fireworks (Fireworks Act);
• Binary exploding targets;
• Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description;
• Controlled air incinerators
• Air curtain burners; and
• Carbonizers.
This prohibition applies to all areas within the Coastal Fire Centre that are outside of municipal boundaries. Municipalities may follow BC Wildfire Service prohibitions or may impose different prohibitions based on conditions in their local area. If you are in a municipality, be sure to check if local prohibitions are in place. If you are within a regional district or improvement district, this prohibition applies as well as any local prohibition issued by the local authority.
This prohibition also applies to the following types of land within municipal boundaries:
• Parks, conservancies and recreation areas (Park Act);
• Recreation sites, recreation trails, interpretive forest sites and trail-based recreation areas (Forest and Range Practices Act);
• Ecological reserves (Ecological Reserve Act);
• Wildlife management areas (Wildlife Act); and
• Private managed forest land (Private Managed Forest Land Act).
An updated map of this prohibition area will be issued soon. For a description of fire centre boundaries, please visit: Fire Centres – BC Wildfire Service

🚨 Cowichan Bay Fire Rescue Receives Next Generation 911 Grant Funding 🚨

Cowichan Bay Fire Rescue is proud to announce that the Cowichan Bay Improvement District has been approved for $45,000 in funding through the 2026 Next Generation 911 (NG911) Program administered by the Union of BC Municipalities and funded by the Province of British Columbia.

This funding will support the implementation of mobile CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) units for fire department apparatus, helping modernize emergency response capabilities and improve situational awareness for firefighters responding to emergencies throughout our community.

The new technology will enhance communication, dispatch efficiency, mapping capabilities, and access to critical incident information directly from responding apparatus — improving both firefighter safety and service delivery to the residents we protect.

We would like to thank:
• Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM)
• Province of British Columbia
• Ministry of Citizens’ Services
for supporting emergency service modernization and public safety initiatives across BC communities.

Cowichan Bay Fire Rescue remains committed to investing in technology, training, and equipment that strengthens our ability to serve the community safely and effectively.

Around 7:05 PM this evening, members of Cowichan Bay Fire Rescue responded to a fully involved structure fire in the 800 block of Cherry Point Road in Cobble Hill.

Twenty-four firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire, which had also extended into nearby trees. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

We would like to thank our mutual aid partners from Mill Bay Fire Rescue for their assistance and support on scene.

Apparatus and agencies involved included:

Cowichan Bay Fire Rescue
• CBFR Command 47
• CBFR Chief 1
• CBFR Engine 41
• CBFR Engine 44
• CBFR Tender 49
• CBFR Tender 45
• CBFR Tender 42
• CBFR Utility 46

Mill Bay Fire Rescue
• MBFR Engine 74

Additional support provided by:
• Office of the Fire Commissioner Fire Service Advisor
• EMCON
• Shawnigan RCMP
• BC Hydro
• BC Emergency Health Services
• North Island 9-1-1 Corporation

Thank you to all responding personnel and partner agencies for their professionalism, teamwork, and dedication.

We are, however, disappointed that some members of the public did not follow directions from emergency personnel while crews were actively operating on scene.

Structure fires require significant space for apparatus staging, water supply operations, and the placement of portable water tanks and hose lines. Entering restricted areas or ignoring directions from firefighters creates unnecessary safety risks for both the public and our members.

Please stay clear of emergency scenes and allow firefighters and emergency personnel the space needed to safely do their job. Your cooperation helps ensure everyone goes home safely.

Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, we pause to recognize the people behind the uniform. Those who continue to show up, day after day, carrying responsibility most will never fully see.
We stand in support of firefighters and their families, not only for the work they do, but for who they are beyond the job.

We are proud to announce that Cowichan Bay Fire Rescue has officially received its Superior Tanker Water Shuttle Accreditation from the Fire Underwriters Survey (FUS).

This accreditation recognizes our department’s ability to deliver a sustained and reliable water supply in areas without hydrant service, meeting nationally recognized standards. It reflects the dedication of our members, the effectiveness of our training programs, and the investment in our apparatus and operations.

Our accreditation certificate and supporting documentation are available on our website under:
Trustees → Documents → General Information → Superior Tanker Water Shuttle Accreditation
