Today, Captain Tony Hryko is retiring after an exceptional 30 years of dedicated service.

Over the course of his career, Captain Hryko has been a steady and respected leader, both within the department and out in the community. His commitment to service extended beyond daily operations, contributing to five wildfire deployments where his experience and leadership proved invaluable. He also proudly served during the 2010 Olympics, representing the department during a significant moment on the national stage.

As a second-generation firefighter, Captain Hryko carried on a proud family legacy, demonstrating professionalism, resilience, and a deep sense of duty throughout his career.

As he closes this chapter, Tony looks forward to a well-earned retirement, spending more time at the family cabin and enjoying the slower pace that comes with it.

Please join us in thanking Captain Tony Hryko for his decades of service and in wishing him all the best in retirement.

As a result of a complete fire ban enacted by BC Wildfire Service, the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and its surrounding partner agencies will be issuing the same ban, effective Thursday, May 7 at 12:00 noon.

Campfires will not be allowed throughout the Coastal Fire Centreโ€™s jurisdiction, including all provincial parks, crown land, and private property. This ban also includes the suspension of the beach fire program at Goose Spit Park.

The following area fire departments are involved in the complete ban:
โ€ข Comox Fire Rescue
โ€ข Courtenay Fire Department
โ€ข Cumberland Fire Rescue
โ€ข Denman Island Fire Rescue
โ€ข F***y Bay Volunteer Fire Department
โ€ข Hornby Island Fire Rescue
โ€ข Merville Fire Department
โ€ข Mount Washington Fire Department
โ€ข Oyster River Fire Rescue
โ€ข Ships Point Volunteer Fire Department
โ€ข Union Bay Fire Rescue

The ban does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or portable campfire devices that use briquettes, liquid, or gaseous fuel, provided they are CSA or ULC approved, and the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.

To further reduce wildfire risk in the Comox Valley, a smoking ban has been issued in all CVRD parks, and all fire rings will be removed from designated parks.

Here in the City of Courtenay weโ€™re already seeing warmer, drier conditions earlier than usual and that means wildfire risk is starting sooner this year.

Even in spring, dry grass and debris can ignite easily. A small spark can spread quickly. Take steps to FireSmart your home today by creating a non combustible zone and having a Home Ignition Zone Assessment completed.

Clear leaves and debris from your roof, keep grass short, and make sure any outdoor burning is done safely and legally.

If you see smoke or fire, report it right away.
Letโ€™s all do our part to protect our community because when it comes to wildfire, prevention starts at home.
