Koala Place - Child and Youth Advocacy Centre To help create a community that responds collectively to child abuse, and empowers those who are impacted. round the clock.

With short-term funding from Justice Canada - Victims Fund, PrévAction - Child and Youth Advocacy Centre opened its doors on January 6th, 2014. Ensuingly, with a new identity and redesigned logo, a press conference was held on March 18th 2014 to announce the Centre’s new name, Koala Place. The one-stop child-focused facility is located at 123 Pitt Street in Cornwall and is available to Cornwall Co

mmunity Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police of S.D.&G., Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, The Children’s Aid Society, Akwesasne Child & Family Services and Victim Services of S.D.G. & A. Koala Place is a not for profit organization governed by a Board of Directors. Koala Place is unique in our area because it is a communal commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach to child abuse, striving to minimize stress, anxiety and trauma to the children while promoting safety, protection and justice. The Centre is equipped with two interview rooms, with state of the art recording equipment. This documentation preserves the child’s statement, to later be used in the justice process, and eliminates excessive repetition of the circumstances surrounding their abuse

To further improve services, Koala Place has partnered with Victim Services to provide additional support and to liaise with other community services throughout the investigation. They provide information and assistance to victims of crime, whether or not charges laid. Victim Services, also a not for profit organization, ensures victims receive the help they need to assist them in the development of their personal path to recovery. Koala Place collaborates with a number of community partners, including but not limited to Police Services, Child Protection Services, Medical Services, Mental Health Professionals, Victim Services and Prosecution.

𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 is a text-first social media platform connected to Instagram that allows users to share short posts, join public conversations, and engage with others through replies, likes, and reposts. Built by Meta Platforms, it emphasizes real-time discussion and trending topics, often encouraging users to share opinions, experiences, and personal updates in a highly visible, public space. Threads’ public-by-default nature, algorithm-driven content, and integration with a user’s existing social network can expose young people to harmful or inappropriate content, online harassment, and interactions with strangers that may escalate quickly, especially without strong privacy settings, supervision, and digital literacy skills in place.

𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 & 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧:
➡ Content is largely public, which can expose youth to inappropriate or harmful material.
➡ Users may encounter cyberbullying, harassment, or hate speech through replies and interactions.
➡ Direct messaging features (via Instagram integration) can increase the risk of unwanted contact, grooming, or exploitation.
➡ The algorithm may surface sensitive or misleading content, including misinformation.
➡ Time spent scrolling can impact mental health, sleep, and self-esteem, especially for younger users.

𝐎𝐩𝐭-𝐈𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲:
Threads inherits many of its privacy settings from Instagram, but accounts are often public by default unless changed. Users should review privacy settings carefully, including who can see posts, reply, or interact. Conversations and activity may also be used by Meta for data collection and ad targeting.

Consent is more than a one-time “yes”, it’s a continuous conversation!

Remember the 4 C’s of consent:
💬 Clear
♻️ Continuous
🧠 Conscious
🚫 Coercion-free

Don’t assume. Don’t pressure. Ask, listen, and respect the answer, every time!

𝐘𝟗𝟗 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐩 that connects users with strangers from around the world through random text-based conversations, public chat rooms, and private messaging. While it can offer a sense of curiosity, social connection, and the excitement of meeting new people, it’s important for parents and caregivers to understand how Y99’s anonymity, lack of age verification, and unpredictable interactions can expose young people to inappropriate content, online predators, and conversations that may quickly escalate beyond their ability to safely manage without guidance and strong digital safety awareness.

𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 & 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧:
Safety features are minimal. It includes reporting and blocking features but little else.
Even though some chat rooms blur images, clicking on them could reveal pornographic or violent content.
Website features ads from third parties. Some of these ads look like chat windows and could mislead users.
The private chats increase the risk of grooming, sextortion or other coercive behaviours.

𝐎𝐩𝐭-𝐈𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲:
Y99 has no opt-in policy. Using an app without a clear, public privacy policy carries risk if you care about how your data is handled.

Autism acceptance means creating safer, more inclusive communities — not just awareness. Autistic individuals are at higher risk of victimization, including bullying, violence, or abuse. Together, we can listen, support, and provide resources to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing. 💙

means listening, supporting, and empowering.
--

signifie écouter, soutenir et donner du pouvoir.
