Last night, our members went through various kits that get deployed out on medical and trauma tasks. These kits are regularly checked and reviewed to ensure that they are ready to be deployed into the field.

Is there anything that you carry in your own personal first aid kit that is unique or customized to your needs?

Safe Boating Awareness Week is here — and for Search and Rescue teams, water-related calls are all too common.

As warmer weather brings more people onto our lakes, rivers, and coastal waters, preparation can make all the difference. Cold water, changing weather, mechanical issues, and remote locations can quickly turn a day on the water into an emergency.

Every year, Search and Rescue teams respond to boaters who are overdue, stranded, injured, experiencing mechanical problems, or unexpectedly in the water—many of these incidents are preventable with proper planning.

Before leaving shore:
✔️ Wear your lifejacket
✔️ Check weather, tides, and water conditions
✔️ File a trip plan and tell someone where you're going
✔️ Carry communication devices and emergency essentials
✔️ Ensure your vessel is fueled, maintained, and ready

If you run into trouble on the water, call 9-1-1 immediately. Calling early allows emergency responders and Search and Rescue teams to get resources moving quickly when every minute matters.

A few minutes of preparation can prevent hours of searching.

A look back at a Coquitlam Search and Rescue exercise at Pitt Lake, where members trained in the rugged terrain and waterways that continue to challenge our team today.

The gear may have changed… the hairstyles definitely have… but the commitment to bringing people home safely has remained the same. And yes, apparently high-vis orange was very in style.

For generations, Coquitlam SAR volunteers have answered the call—on land, on water, and in some of the most challenging environments in British Columbia.
Do you recognize anyone in this photo or remember this training exercise? We’d love to hear your stories.

Over the past couple of weeks, our team has been working towards expanding our capabilities. Back in March a number of our members were certified for Night Vision Hoist Operations as well as Night Vision Hover Entry/Exit.

Just last weekend, our Class D team also trained to utilize the Petzl Lezard which is a hoist/mountain rescue tool which is designed for helicopter operations when the rescue tech is inserted into steep mountainous terrain - it ensures the helicopter is linked to the terrain with a detachable link.

We would like to thank all those who were critical in pioneering these new capabilities, including our partners at EMCR, the BCSARA Helicopter Operations Working Group, North Shore Rescue and especially Talon Helicopters.

Another great day at the Fingerling Festival in Port Moody!

We always enjoy connecting with so many incredible members of our community, sharing safety tips, talking about what we do, and meeting both familiar and new faces. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, ask questions, and support your local search and rescue team.
One of our youngest visitors found a creative new use for our dog toys.

We love seeing kids (and future SAR members!) stop by, ask questions, learn a few knots, and have some fun with the team. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it such a great day!

May 2, 2026 at 8:28pm - Coquitlam SAR was tasked out by Coquitlam RCMP to search for a trio of lost hikers on the East side of Burke Mountain. One member of the group began to go ahead on the decent, off-trail, and became separated from the group. Eventually the slower pair reached the bottom of the trail, however the last member of the group that went ahead, was nowhere to be found. One member of the group decided to go back up to look for the missing member but left their backpack with gear down at the trailhead, including their light and water. All members of the hiking party were located and were escorted back to the trailhead and all members were safely out of the field by 9:50pm.

This task is a good reminder to hike with a group and keep together. Travel at the speed of the slowest person. If a person becomes separated, they are more likely to become lost. If you do hike alone, be aware of increased risks and always tell someone where you are going!
