Port Hope neighbours - have your say.
Something to ponder on this rainy Sunday...
Tuesday's council meeting agenda includes the proposed new parking and traffic bylaw (link below), and this one is worth paying attention to.
Only 113 community members have engaged with the public consultation so far, for a bylaw that would restrict parking on every single street in Port Hope. If this is the first you're hearing about it, now is a good time to take a look.
This one is more complex than it might first appear. Beyond the question of snow removal, there are real connections to some of our core community priorities: equity and how restrictions hit hardest for neighbours with limited or no off-street parking, housing and our goals around infill and diversifying options, stormwater management and what happens when more yards get paved to create off-street parking, and safe streets, when the absence of parked cars creates wider, unobstructed throughfares which are associated with speeding. And as a few neighbours have already flagged for me, what happens when people can no longer make the choice to leave their car parked overnight when making the responsible decision to walk home after a night out?
There is reference to a permitting system which could be used to alleviate some of these impacts - the proposed bylaw includes the following: The Municipality "may" issue permits subject to "such terms and conditions as it deems appropriate."
Permits "may include" temporary exemptions (maximum 10 per licence plate per calendar year) and residential parking permits for properties with no driveway or limited off-street parking.
Critically: permits are not valid during a snow event, emergency, or temporary parking restriction.
The good news is that this won't be coming to a final vote Tuesday. My understanding is that it will come back to Committee of the Whole and Council over the summer for further deliberation before anything is decided. That means there's still time to review it, ask questions, and share how it might affect you and your neighbourhood.
