5 seats just became available for the regional training course starting tomorrow in Deer Lake. Please contact them if you are interested.

Deer Lake Fire Rescue is proud to host the Ground Cover Firefighting for Structural Firefighters regional training course this summer!

This essential program bridges the gap between traditional structural tactics and the unique demands of fast moving brush and grass fires.

Event Details

Dates: June 13 & 14, 2026

Location: Deer Lake Fire Hall @ 26 Reids Lane

Focus: Specialized tactics for ground cover and Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) incidents.

Why You Need to Be There

As fire seasons become more intense and the lines between urban and wildland areas blur, municipal firefighters are increasingly on the frontlines of complex interface incidents. This course provides the critical preparation needed to protect both yourself and your community.

Key Benefits of Attending:

New Tactics: Move beyond interior firefighting to learn direct and indirect attack methods specifically for ground cover.

Protect Critical Infrastructure: Gain specialized skills for structure triage and protection in high-risk interface zones.

Enhance Safety & Survival: Focus on situational awareness, escape routes, and managing fires with limited water supplies.

Regional Collaboration: Train alongside members from other departments to ensure everyone speaks the same language during major mutual-aid incidents.

Expert Curriculum: The course utilizes the latest IFSTA Ground Cover Fire Fighting, combining standards from the NFPA, & Forestry Service.

Don’t miss this chance to sharpen your skills and build a stronger shield for our region.

This past weekend I had the privilege to attend the FDIC Atlantic - Fire Department Information Conference Atlantic held at Acadia University in Wolfville,NS. The experience was phenomenal!

The educational content was top notch and throughout the conference I had the opportunity to participate in training sessions led by renowned Canadian and international fire service instructors. Additionally, suppliers and manufacturers showcased the latest tools, technology, and apparatus. The event was a great opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences with other firefighters who have a passion for what they do.

There were a total of 13 Newfoundland and Labrador participants including FDIC Atlantic Board Member Paul Snow, 6 members of Lewisporte Regional Fire-Rescue, 4 members from Town of Labrador city Fire Rescue, and Don Marcia Antle of the Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department who was an instructor for the conference!

The training was very valuable and affordable with a cost of $360(single occupancy room) or $300(double occupancy room). This cost included all training, 5 meals throughout the conference, and 2 nights accommodations.

I would highly recommend this training for members of the NL Fire service who have the ability within their training budget to participate.
You can find all of the information surrounding the conference here: https://www.fdicatlantic.ca/Registration

Evan Cox

Hi Firefighters, Just a reminder to complete the second Survey for individual Firefighters. So share with the members of your hall. The more we get the better.

The Recruitment and Retention (R&R) Committee needs your help filling out the second survey. They have been working diligently to provide a pair of surveys for the NLAFS membership. This second survey is designed for all Firefighters and we need your voice. It can be accessed using the following link:
https://forms.gle/vKQjFkoaLw8n6Ugu6

We recognize that first responder recruitment and retention is on the minds of most Fire Department, therefore we’re asking in this survey that we designed to be completed by individual Firefighters (Part 2).

By participating, you will contribute to building the knowledge your Association needs to identify current Firefighting challenges and opportunities in our province. This will aid the NLAFS in strengthening our three pillars: advocacy, education and member services. NLAFS is pleased to have representatives of Municipalities NL and Professional Municipal Administrators working with us on this important topic.

You can find our committee member listing here:

Reach out to any member if needed.
We thank you all for your service to your communities and would also like to thank all of our committee members and chair for their hard work and dedication to this committee.
