☀️ Community Safety Reminder: ATVs & Golf Carts ☀️

The District has received concerns about the unsafe operation of ATVs and golf carts in our subdivisions, particularly involving underage operators, excessive speed, too many passengers and required safety equipment not being worn or used.

With pedestrians, cyclists, children and vehicles all sharing our roads, we are asking parents, vehicle owners and operators to please make safety a priority.

🛞 ATVs

- ATVs operating on municipal land must be properly licensed with the District.
- The maximum speed on municipal roads is 30 km/h.
- Helmets and eye protection are mandatory for operators and passengers.
- Passengers are only permitted when the ATV is designed by the manufacturer to carry them.
- Youth operators must meet the age, supervision, training and licensing requirements of the ATV Bylaw and provincial legislation.
- ATVs must be operated with due care and reasonable consideration for others.

⛳ Golf Carts

- Golf carts operating on municipal roads must be licensed with the District and display a valid plate.
- Operators must have at least a Class 7 driver's licence. Underage or unlicensed youth are not permitted to operate golf carts on municipal roads.
- Golf carts cannot exceed 24 km/h and must always be operated at a speed that is reasonable and safe for the conditions.
- No more passengers than the golf cart is designed to safely seat are permitted, and passengers cannot ride standing up.
- Golf carts must have the required safety equipment, including a slow-moving vehicle sign and rear-view mirror.
- Golf carts may only be operated during permitted hours and on roads where their use is allowed.

These rules are in place for a reason. Allowing underage or unlicensed youth to operate these vehicles, excessive speed, overcrowding or failing to use required safety equipment creates a very real risk of serious injury.

Parents and vehicle owners, please make sure anyone using your ATV or golf cart is legally permitted to operate it and understands the rules before handing over the keys.

If you observe an ATV or golf cart being operated improperly or in an unsafe manner, please contact the RCMP to report it. For an immediate threat to public safety, call 911.

Please slow down, ride responsibly and help keep our roads safe for everyone.

🌲 Reducing wildfire risk is a shared responsibility.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, in partnership with Great Blue Heron Provincial Park, will be completing fuel management work around the Murray Point subdivision this fall. Please take a moment to review the information below to learn more about the project.
Murray Point property owners can further reduce wildfire risk by taking FireSmart steps on their own properties. Before starting any work, please check with the District's Development Department to determine whether a permit or other approvals may be required.
Working together, we can help make our community more resilient to wildfire.

The District of Lakeland No. 521 Municipal By-Election for Division 2 Councillor will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
Advance Poll 📅 Monday, August 17 🕙 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. 📍 District Office Council Chambers
Election Day 📅 Saturday, August 22 🕘 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. 📍 District Office Council Chambers
To vote, you must: ✔️ Be a Canadian citizen ✔️ Be at least 18 years of age ✔️ Meet the eligibility requirements under The Local Government Election Act, 2015 for the District of Lakeland No. 521.
Please remember that there is no voters list, so you'll need to bring identification to vote. A driver's licence, passport, birth certificate, or other acceptable identification will be accepted.
We encourage all eligible Division 2 voters to take part in the election and have their say.

🌲 District of Lakeland No. 521 – July Council Meeting Highlights 🌲

Council met on July 15, 2026, at the Municipal Office in Christopher Lake. Key decisions included:

✅ Awarding the Walking Path construction tender to B&B Construction
✅ Approval of the purchase of a new dump trailer for Public Works
✅ Hiring of two seasonal Public Works employees
✅ Adoption of the Recreational Vehicle (RV) Bylaw
✅ Acceptance of the 2025 Draft Audited Financial Statements
✅ Acceptance of the Request for Proposal from Joel Broda Real Estate for the sale of municipal property
✅ Approval of the remaining 2026 Council meeting dates:
• August 19
• September 9
• October 21
• November 17
• December 16

New Boat Launch Signage Reflects Council's Commitment to Protecting Our Lakes

Council is pleased to introduce new educational signage at all public boat launches throughout the municipality.

This Council-led initiative reflects Council's commitment to protecting our lakes while ensuring they remain safe and enjoyable for residents and visitors alike. The signs provide practical information on responsible boating practices that help protect water quality, reduce shoreline erosion, safeguard fish and wildlife habitat, and promote the safety of everyone enjoying the water.

The signage encourages boaters to:

Clean, Drain, Dry their watercraft and equipment to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.
Operate at slow speeds in shallow water to reduce shoreline erosion, protect aquatic habitat, and improve safety for all lake users.
Use wake boats and wake-enhancing activities in deeper water where their impact on the lake bed and shoreline is minimized.
Council recognizes that our lakes are among our community's greatest assets. By providing clear, consistent information at every public boat launch, this initiative encourages responsible recreation while helping preserve these waterbodies for future generations.

Council thanks residents and visitors for doing their part to help keep our lakes healthy, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.

Notice to Residents: Fibre Optic Internet Infrastructure Installation

The municipality has recently received inquiries from ratepayers regarding the construction crews working along local roads. We would like to provide the following information regarding this project to clarify who is operating in the area and why.

RFNow Inc. is currently installing underground fibre optic lines in select areas throughout the municipality to establish high-speed internet infrastructure.

Key Information for Ratepayers:

Federal Funding: RFNow received grant funding through the Federal Government's Universal Broadband Fund, which targets rural and underserved areas. Because the main infrastructure build is federally subsidized, they are able to offer the direct connection (the "fibre drop") to the property line at no cost during the initial construction phase.

Future Installation Costs: The installation is only free while crews and heavy equipment are actively working in the area. Ratepayers who decline the connection now but change their minds in the future will be responsible for the full installation and trenching costs out of pocket.

Property Value: Having modern fibre infrastructure physically connected to a property line is considered a permanent utility upgrade, which generally enhances long-term property value.

Company Status: RFNow is a completely independent, legitimate telecommunications company based out of Western Canada. They are not affiliated with SaskTel.

District Authorization: District Council has granted RFNow permission to install its infrastructure within municipally managed rights-of-way, allowing interested residents the opportunity to access enhanced connectivity. During discussions, Council noted that the initial proposal would leave many properties underserved. RFNow has indicated it will expand the project to serve most of the Emma Lake and Christopher Lake areas if a minimum of 25% of eligible residents subscribe to the service.

Swimming Advisory Lifted – Bell's Beach
Good news!

The Saskatchewan Health Authority has advised that the most recent water samples from Bell's Beach are well within the acceptable guidelines, and the Swimming Advisory has now been lifted.
The water has returned to safe levels for recreational use, and swimming may resume.
