On February 28, 2026, Chilliwack SAR was requested for Mutual Aid to assist our neighbours, Hope SAR, with an avalanche response in the Coquihalla corridor.
A group of three splitboarders triggered a large avalanche while boot‑packing up Thar Couloir. All three were caught and partially buried. The party was able to self‑extricate and call for help. Two subjects sustained injuries and were assessed, treated and packaged by Hope SAR and Chilliwack SAR members.
We’d like to sincerely thank for their assistance with access and extrication, the Avalanche Technicians for on‑site avalanche assessment and operational support, and for receiving, treating, and transporting the patients. Thank you as well to for involving us in this task.
We are grateful for the strong inter‑agency teamwork and are wishing the subjects a full recovery.

Winter isn’t wintering much here this year ;)

With minimal low-elevation snow in our area to access for an evening training session, the team got creative.

We headed over to to practice various snow anchors and rope skills on their wood chip & sawdust piles for both our SAR calls and personal adventures.

Larger wood chip piles worked to simulate avalanche burials and enabled us to do transceiver searches, probing, and shovelling techniques.

“Snowy mountains” were rappelled and “icy cliffs” were ascended all within a few minutes of home!

We WON it!🎉

Last night at the Defender Service Awards gala in California we were officially announced as the winner of the Search & Rescue category, narrowly edging out the equally deserving Pemberton SAR in the final.

Early in 2026 we’ll get to customize a brand-new Land Rover Defender 130 to suit our needs and receive $30,000 USD to help us purchase vital equipment to keep you safe in the backcountry. The Defender will help improve our response capabilities here at home and while providing mutual aid to neighbouring teams.

This win is your win! We asked for your votes and the overwhelming support from our community was truly inspiring.

Thank you’s go out to BC teams and for representing this corner of the SAR world so well during this competition.

Finally, to Land Rover, Chase, and Pelican - thank you for hosting this incredible competition and helping volunteer organizations get the support and resources needed to continue making positive differences in our communities.
