The Chester Fire Services Committee's 2026/27 Fire & Emergency Services Budget has been approved by all parties: by the Committee on March 11, 2026; and by the joint owners of the Committee: the Village of Chester on March 18, 2026 and the Municipality of Chester on March 26, 2026.

Having the budget passed before the start of the fiscal year on April 1st is a condition of the Intermunicipal Fire Agreement that governs the Village-Municipality partnership, and sets the Chester Volunteer Fire Department up with the support they need to both operate and plan for the future.

All residents in the CVFD's services area (Districts 3, 7 and part of 1) pay the same fire rate, which has seen a two-cent increase this year to 0.134 to enable greater investment in reserves for equipment replacement and for the new fire station. This fire rate is still just below the average in the Municipality.

Behind the heroic image of Canadian firefighters lies a troubling reality: cancer and mental health crises are claiming more lives than fire itself. A recent study found that cancer accounts for nearly 85% of firefighter deaths, with rates more than four times the national average — driven by constant exposure to toxic smoke and chemicals. Meanwhile, mental health claims skyrocketed by nearly 1,500% between 2007 and 2021, reflecting the toll of PTSD, burnout, and depression on those in the profession.

The Globe and Mail's editorial board argues that meaningful action is overdue — from better decontamination equipment and expanded cancer screening, to consistent workers' compensation coverage and ongoing mental health research. As Canada faces growing wildfire threats and recruitment challenges, supporting the health of firefighters isn't just the right thing to do — it's essential for the rest of us too.

Great news. Our volunteer firefighters devote many hours to training and deserve appropriate equipment. Thank you!

The Department of Emergency Management is investing in two mobile burn units and four propane-fuelled training props to expand hands-on firefighter training across Nova Scotia.

Mobile burn units are portable, self-contained training trailers that allow firefighters to practise live-fire scenarios in a safe, controlled setting. The units use propane-fuelled fires, smoke and adjustable layouts to simulate real emergencies safely. With two new units based in the western and central regions, there are now three mobile burn units available across the province.

The propane-fuelled training props are modular simulators that safely recreate different fire scenarios, allowing firefighters to practise essential skills such as hose and extinguisher use, shutting off fuel sources and cooling fires.

This new equipment will give firefighters across Nova Scotia safer, more realistic training closer to home.
