The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission’s goal is to provide safe and reliable water and wastewater service with environmental integrity to the customers and communities we serve. All of our staff are certified and licensed with the appropriate levels of certification and licensing for each facility, which may include:

- wastewater treatment

In addition to our operation and maintenance functions, we also respond to petition requests, construct water and sewer mains as required, and are involved in water and wastewater facility upgrades and expansions where needed. Background History
The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (CK PUC) was created at the time of amalgamation in 1998 for hydro, water and wastewater services. This utility took on the responsibility of these services from 23 municipalities and 13 former utilities. Upon the deregulation of hydro and the creation of incorporated companies for hydro servicing, the sole responsibility of the CK PUC became water and wastewater servicing. Currently, CK PUC operates and maintains 8 water and 10 wastewater treatment facilities and systems. It owns approximately 1750 km of waterlines and 550 km of sanitary sewers and provides service to approximately 86,750 individuals. The creation of CK PUC was done in a manner that prepared the utility for the anticipated changes in the delivery of services to our customers. The design of the organization also took into account the future competitive environment in which the utility must operate.

The Chatham-Kent PUC is completing the required Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA) Addendum for the relocation of Chatham Sanitary Pumping Station #11 (SPS #11).

We’re reviewing current and future sanitary sewer capacity needs in northwest Chatham to support projected growth and development.

This Addendum builds on the 2016 study for the existing SPS #11, located at the intersection of Oxley Drive and Sandy Street, and will help confirm the preferred wastewater servicing solution.

As part of this work, a virtual Public Information Centre (PIC) will be available starting July 16, 2026. The PIC will share study information, wastewater servicing options, evaluation criteria, and the recommended strategy.

📢 Hydrant Flushing - May 22nd, 2026. Public works will be flushing hydrants in the Dresden area and along Baseline Rd and Kent Bridge Rd. Customers may experience reduction in pressure and/or some water discolouration and are being advised to run a cold water tap and avoid laundry duties until the water is clear.

📢 NOTICE: Chatham-Kent Public Works are flushing mains near the Eberts and Dresden area and will continue tomorrow, May 22nd to reflush. Residents may experience discoloured water and are encourgaged to run their cold-water taps until it clears.

CK PUC Water & Wastewater Master Plan PIC #1 is now Live!

The Chatham-Kent PUC has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Master Plan Update Study to develop strategies for water and wastewater servicing that support both existing needs and future growth through 2051.

This study will guide safe and reliable water and wastewater services across the municipality for decades. It will evaluate current infrastructure, identify future needs, and support long-term planning as our community continues to grow.

An online Public Information Centre will be available from May 20 to June 3, 2026, with the comment period closing on June 3, 2026.

Residents are encouraged to review the materials and share their feedback. You can also subscribe for project updates on the Master Plan Let’s Talk page.
