Our daily lives are more plugged in than ever before. This October, local fire officials are asking everyone to take a closer look at how they charge their electronics.
Fire Prevention Week runs from October 4 to 10, 2026 and this year’s official theme is: “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”
4 Simple Rules for Safe Charging⚡
🔋Use the Right Gear: Only use the original cord and adapter that came with your device. If you buy a replacement, make sure it has a Canadian safety mark like CSA or ULC.
🔋Charge on Hard Surfaces: Always charge your phone, laptop, or tablet on a hard, flat surface like a desk or counter. Never charge devices on a bed, couch, or pillow. This traps heat and can start a fire.
🔋Unplug at 100 Per Cent: Do not leave your electronics permanently plugged into the wall. Once the battery is fully charged, unplug it. Overcharging damages the battery over time.
🔋Watch for Warning Signs: Check your devices often. If a battery feels very hot, looks puffy or swollen, smells strange, or makes a leaking sound, stop using it immediately.
Protect Your Household đźŹ
Fire Prevention Week is also the perfect time to test your home's smoke alarms. Make sure you press the test button on your alarms this week, and change the batteries if they are old.
