Congratulations to the recipients of the 2026 Heritage Awards! 👏

Presented today at City Hall, the annual awards recognize individuals and organizations whose work helps preserve, document and share Charlottetown’s heritage.

This year’s recipients are:

• Richard and Cheryl Jamieson – For the careful restoration of their designated heritage home at 267 Fitzroy Street.

• Lian Zhang – For the promotion of Asian and Chinese heritage and culture in the city.

• L’nuey – For its online digital archive, “Tku Atlasma’lit,” which provides access to a wide variety of documents related to the history of the Mi’kmaq people of Prince Edward Island through the Robertson Library’s Island Archives platform.

• Dilek Yesil – For the creation of Tea and Tales, an immersive heritage storytelling experience presented at The Haviland (Farringford), a designated heritage property built in 1866.

• Ian Scott – For the promotion of built heritage and advocacy for heritage preservation through his writing and lectures.

• Provincial Realty – For the preservation of 49 Pownal Street, a former warehouse built by entrepreneur Owen Connolly in 1886, and the only one of its kind in the city.

• Katherine Dewar – Catherine G. Hennessey Award – For her many years of work researching, documenting and promoting women’s history, as well as her generosity in sharing her vast knowledge with the public via published works, lectures, and exhibits.

Congratulations to all of this year’s recipients and thank you for your contributions to preserving and sharing Charlottetown’s history.

Special thanks to former City councillor, Kim Devine, who presented a tribute to historian and activist Catherine G. Hennessey. Josh Silver, Red Seal Carpenter and Learning Manager of the Heritage Retrofit Carpentry Program at Holland College, also highlighted some of the restoration projects he and his students have worked on.

Charlottetown has more public art on its streets! 🎨

Through an open call issued by the City and the Arts Advisory Board, four P.E.I. artists were selected by an independent jury to create original designs for traffic control boxes at intersections across Charlottetown. Works by local artists Bhreagh Krszwda, Sofia Cervantes Romero, Trudy Spooner, and Maggie J. Whitten Henry were printed on vinyl wraps and will be installed for up to five years.

🎄Charlottetown’s Tree-mendous Search is on!

The City is searching for a tree to take centre stage in downtown Charlottetown this holiday season – and it could be growing in your yard!

The selected tree will be displayed on the Lou MacEachern Upper Plaza at Confederation Centre of the Arts and illuminated during the City’s annual tree-lighting event.

Have a tree in mind? We’re looking for one that:

💠Is at least 30 feet tall (max. 40 feet)
💠Is a spruce or fir
💠Has full, even branching with no large gaps
💠Has a single trunk
💠Is accessible for crews and equipment to safely remove

Preference will be given to trees located in Charlottetown that meet all eligibility requirements and are already expected to be removed due to safety concerns, structural issues, declining health, or similar circumstances.

Costs associated with the removal and installation of the selected tree, including tree and stump removal, transportation and setup, will be fully covered by the City.

Grafton Street Reduced to Single Lane for the PEI International Shellfish Festival

Location: Grafton Street between Gateway Dental (369 Grafton Street) and Edward Street

Duration: 12 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18 until 6 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20

Traffic Impacts: Grafton Street from Gateway Dental (369 Grafton Street) to Edward Street will be reduced to single lane traffic to accommodate the PEI International Shellfish Festival.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes and reduce speed when travelling in the area due to increased pedestrian traffic, particularly at the crosswalk near the Charlottetown Event Grounds.

The City of Charlottetown’s Parks and Recreation Department advises residents that the Hermitage Creek Nature Trail loop between Raiders Road and North River Road will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 17 while work is underway to upgrade the trail surface.

Today, MP Sean Casey and Mayor Philip Brown announced more than $199,000 in federal funding for the Cody Banks Arena retrofits project through the Direct Delivery stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund.

The project will include the installation of heat pumps and a solar photovoltaic system, integrated with the City’s existing building automation system.

These upgrades will help reduce energy consumption and emissions while supporting a more environmentally friendly space for community and recreational use.
