Something for the weekend.

You will recollect from the Covid pandemic, that there are all kinds of health information that can be determined from what we flush away. Medications as well as viruses can pass through us and still have an effect downstream. Expired medications for this reason should never be flushed or put into the garbage as sooner or later they will enter the broader environment even after treatment.

Similarly, discarded sharps in either the garbage or recycling stream or loose in the street are extremely hazardous, in a way that you only really get to appreciate when you have had to accompany someone to A&E for a raft of blood tests and treatment. Fortunately, my staff were all well vaccinated due to the nature of the work, but the anxiety caused and the what ifs is something I would not wish upon anyone.

The links below provides details of the pharmacies that are participating and also the guidance of what materials they accept.

Tuesday Tip. Every quarter, I do a redemption centre run as part of my Saturday morning weekly shop. I'm heading that way, so I kill two birds in one go. On average we have a recycling box full of wine bottles (curtesy of the wife). At least two reusable bags of non-redeemable glass bottles and Jars, a clear plastic bag of white polystyrene, and at least three very full clear bags of soft plastic films. There are also normally a few full bags of other redeemable items such as cans, plastic bottles and cartons. A full carload.

Having once worked in a redemption centre, I count the redeemable items and hand over round numbers, e.g. 100 cans = $10. etc in clear bags. I have a good relationship with my local centre, and they take the bags at face value and can see plainly that there isn't anything in them that shouldn't be there. I go through very quickly with some extra cash to go towards Christmas.

Below is the complete list of redemption centres with the items that they will accept. As you can see, most accept way more than what I regularly take. These locations are local employers and benefit greatly from your patronage. Do please remember that with all things waste and recycling, you are not the last person to handle them. Please be kind and considerate.

Something for the weekend:

I'm sure you will have a to do list as long as your arm, but if you haven't cleaned your wheeled bins yet, now would be a good time before things start getting baked on.

A quick swish out with a pressure washer works fine but do remember that as the water goes in very fast, it will come out equally as fast with the residue attached. Best to do this at distance and at an angle, or better still have a younger member of the family fully kitted out with safety goggles, face shield and apron and let them discover trigonometry and hydraulic pressure and what that tastes like 😂

I tend to use a boiling kettle rinse down on all of the internal sides. let it cool, tip out, quick rinse with the hose and finally a quick spray with a disinfectant and let dry before filling.

We rinse off our recycling and divert all of our organics into the composters & chickens, so our garbage bin isn't overly used and generally doesn't get that dirty. Time it takes to boil the kettle is roughly equal to how much time is needed to wash out a bin. Easy, and only needed once a year.

Tuesday Tip.

The sole disposal site within the region for waste is the Southern Valley Transfer station, located at 147 Moffatt Street Woodstock, E7M 2H5. 506 328 6139.
Open Mon-Friday 0800-1700.
Sat 0800-1200.

The process on how to use the transfer station is to drive onto the scale that is located on the left just inside the main entrance. The scale has traffic lights, and you will have to stop and only proceed when the lights turn green. Drive around the building and you will see the unloading bay on your right. Follow the directions of the attendant staff. Once unloaded, drive back onto the scale for your second unloaded weight. Drive off the scale and park next to the office. The office is on the right side of the building. Go in and pay for the material you have just dropped off. If you have just recycling. Weigh in and then go to the office for instruction before unloading.
The transfer station cannot accept hazardous waste, liquid wastes or tires.

Tuesday Tip:

Here is a handy visual guide on precisely what can be dropped off at the region's redemption centres.
https://www.circularmaterials.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/NB-Redemption-Centre-Guide-1-1.pdf

It's amazing how much of these materials are thrown away, mainly because this type of information is hidden away on websites.
