Miss Carleton Place Pageant The Miss Carleton Place pageant is Re-Launching in 2022 in memory of Deborah Lowe Roy, under the directorship of Haven Lamothe. CONFIDENCE BREEDS BEAUTY

Miss Carleton Place is a local pageant for Carleton Place residents in memory of Deborah Lowe Roy. Miss Carleton Place pageant accepts contestants aged 16+, married, unmarried, with or without children. Miss Carleton Place pageant aims to be inclusive, and therefore is open to anyone regardless of background, culture, and anyone 16+ years old. Miss Carleton Place is open to contestants who are fem

ale, identify as female, or are non-binary. Miss Carleton Place Titleholders and contestants support each other, show kindness, volunteer, and promote positive pageantry. Our titleholders and contestants form lifelong friends, build confidence, and give back through all types of community service in our beautiful town of Carleton Place and surrounding areas. Miss Carleton Place will have a large aspect of volunteerism, and therefore every contestant must choose a local or national charity or organization to support and raise funds for in preparation of the pageant. Miss Carleton Place is a fun, fresh, innovative pageant system that provides contestants the opportunity to develop lifelong connections, become a community role model, and have opportunities to attend events throughout their year long reign as Miss Carleton Place.

**National and International pageant opportunities may be available based on age and eligibility, to be determined during the Miss Carleton Place reign.**

Today we celebrate the spectrum!!

*Autism is a neurotype, not an illness. It’s a different structuring of the brain from neurotypical (non-autistic) people that results in a different way of seeing and experiencing the world.

*An estimated 1 in 54 people are autistic.

*High functioning and low functioning labels aren’t useful and in most cases can be harmful. For an autistic person, functioning can fluctuate from day-to-day or even hour-to-hour, and it means different things to different people. Labelling somebody high functioning dismisses their struggles while congratulating them for being able to appear ā€˜like the rest of us’. On the flip, labelling somebody low functioning ignores their accomplishments and strengths with a blanket assumption. These labels can directly affect an autistic’s ability to access supports they need.

*Identity first language is preferred by most people in the autistic community. This is saying that somebody is autistic as opposed to saying they are a person with autism. Autism isn’t something they have, it’s not an illness, it is who they are and how they process their experience in the world. (Similar to how you wouldn’t say that a gay person is a person with homosexuality.)

*There is no cure for autism, nor should there be. Autism is a developmental difference in the brain, not a disease. If a cure existed, it would be called eugenics. Master race kind of stuff.

*The blue puzzle piece you may be seeing a lot this month is not a particularly welcome symbol of autism within the community. It is a symbol popularized by autistic hate group Autism Speaks.

*Autism Speaks is a hate group that spends its time and resources vilifying autism and promoting harmful autistic stereotypes including the idea that autism is a wretched illness. They are vocal in the need for a cure, have no autistic representation on their board, and spend only 4% of their annual budget actually helping autistic individuals.

*The better symbol for autistic representation is the rainbow infinity sign. The rainbow infinity has started to grow to include all neurodivergence, including conditions like VAST (ADHD).
