Over the next several days, we’ll be sharing a series of posts about the Government of Alberta’s use of the notwithstanding clause.

We know this conversation may be uncomfortable for some, and not everyone will agree, yet silence isn’t an option when democracy, rights, and freedoms are at stake.

Our messages will be principled and professional, and we invite thoughtful, respectful dialogue from all who share a commitment to those same values.

When the rights of one are removed, the rights of all are at risk.

Please be advised that effective 1100 hrs today, the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) has implemented a Fire Advisory. In alignment with the CFA for the 2025 wildfire season, the Town of Canmore is also putting this advisory into effect immediately within our municipal boundaries.

Fire Advisory Details:

Permits and Restrictions:
All existing fire permits remain valid.
New permits will be evaluated and may be issued on a case-by-case basis.
Fireworks and exploding targets are not permitted.
Open burning without a valid fire permit is prohibited, except for campfires.

Allowed Activities:

Safe wood campfires
Backyard fire pits
Portable propane fire pits
Gas or propane stoves and barbecues
Catalytic or infrared-style heaters
Safe Wood Campfire Guidelines:
Ensure fires are contained within a metal, brick, or rock fire ring.
Place fires on a non-combustible surface (rock, gravel, sand) extending at least 1 metre around the fire.
Fires must be attended at all times.
Fully extinguish your fire before leaving (remember: soak, stir, soak again until cool to the touch).

Please note, additional restrictions may apply specifically within Banff National Park, Kananaskis Country, The MD of Bighorn, and neighbouring municipal jurisdictions

The Town of Canmore Fire Bylaw continues to remain in effect alongside these provincial advisories.
