If you’ve ever called an abusive partner a “narcissist” (or “psychopath” or “sociopath”)… you’re not alone—and the differences actually matter. 🧩

Psychologist Ramani Durvasula points out that these labels get tossed around interchangeably, but they don’t mean the same thing. One key takeaway: every psychopath is narcissistic, but not every narcissist is psychopathic.

In simple terms, narcissism centers on entitlement, control, and a constant need for admiration. Psychopathy tends to include colder traits like no remorse, shallow emotions, and using people with calculated charm. Sociopathy often shows up as more impulsive, reactive behavior—still harmful, but less “polished” and more erratic.

Knowing the patterns can help you name what you’re experiencing and trust your gut—without getting stuck on a label. 💜

Have you noticed people using these terms like they’re the same—what made the differences click for you? 💭

This afternoon, Canada plays its second World Cup game, against Qatar. Win or lose, we know that domestic violence is likely to increase in communities across the country. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, preparation can help. Having a Go Bag is a key part of any safety plan. It can be kept in the trunk, at an office, or with a friend – anywhere it can be grabbed quickly. WSC invites you to visit MakeAGamePlan.ca for safety planning support.
