Kawartha First Nation Reclaims Land after the Acknowledgment by the Government of Canada

A Notice to all levels of Governments Federal Provincial/State, County, Municipal, and their Agents, Heirs and Assigns.

On Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations of Canada, officially acknowledges Canada’s nation-to-nation relationship with the Alliance of Indigenous Nations (AIN), its members, its Treaty, and its International Tribunal, presided over by judges from around the world.

This acknowledgement follows the passage of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) by the Parliament of Canada in 2021, which provides a framework for reconciliation, healing, and cooperative relations.

The AIN International Tribunal now stands as the highest judicial body in Canada, with jurisdiction over both domestic and international cases. AIN members now have the choice between the colonial court system or the Tribunal’s more expedient and cost-effective arbitration process.

The Sovereign Kawartha First Nation, Member 62 of the AIN, is actively reclaiming 15,000 square kilometers of unceded land and waters—an area roughly the size of Georgian Bay. This territory and its resources consist of, but is not limited to, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Minden, Durham Region, Newcastle, Uxbridge, Brock, Port Perry, Scugog, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Bowmanville, Clarington, and East Gwillimbury.

Article 31 -The UNDRIP goes on to guarantee the rights of Indigenous peoples to enjoy and practice their cultures and customs, their religions, and their languages (art. 31), and to develop and strengthen their economies and their social and political institutions.”

Chief William Denby is a candidate for CKL Ward 5 Councillor. He paid the $100 entry fee, filed all the necessary forms, and collected 60 signatures from supporters. Joel Watts accepted his payment, and his name appeared on the city website as a candidate. However, the day before nominations closed, Clerk Cathie Ritchie removed his name, stating that she believed he had faked the 60 nominations. These 60 people were the same individuals who had signed for his provincial election and later re-signed for the Ward 5 election.
This claim does not hold up, and William has filed an appeal and a formal complaint, as it violates election rules. No one has the authority to arbitrarily prevent a candidate from running in an election. Additionally, Ritchie did not refund his $100 entry fee, so William remains in the race.
On the evening of March 19, 2025, the All-Candidates Debate was held at the Pie Eyed Monk Brewery in Lindsay, open to the public. William was invited to attend by Terry Guiel, head of the Lindsay Chamber of Commerce, as his removal is currently under appeal and he is in compliance with the rules.
The city has made repeated attempts to remove William, who is known for his outspoken stance against corruption. They charged him, claiming "they are afraid for their lives" and imposed a "No Contact" order. While William is required to obey this order, the complainants, including city councillors, also have a legal obligation not to harass him, or they could face charges.
At the debate, Bill arrived early. Councillors Tracey Richardson and Charlie MacDonald arrived later. The two tried everything to have Bill removed, but they had no legal grounds. They called the police, but there was no basis for action. They then contacted the property manager, who claimed she had the discretion to remove anyone without giving a reason. As a result, she had William escorted out.
Charlie MacDonald also insisted that Deputy Chief Steve Lesperance be removed, simply because he is The Chief's friend, as well as Steve's wife (Band Council). Consequently, all three were escorted out of the debate, leaving them unable to report on the event.
