Pride Week is a time to celebrate Calgary’s 2SLGBTQ+ community and recognize the work still needed to build communities where everyone feels safe, respected, and included.

2SLGBTQ+ people continue to face inequities within the justice system, including higher risks of violence, exclusion, and incarceration.

At CJHS, we support 2SLGBTQ+ people through housing, youth programs, and criminal justice supports. Building safer communities means making sure everyone has access to dignity, opportunity, and support.

Every young person deserves the opportunity to build a future they feel hopeful about. At Calgary John Howard Society, our youth programs help young people find stability, strengthen relationships and take meaningful steps forward.

International Youth Day highlights the challenges that can place young people at greater risk of becoming involved in the justice system. When those challenges go unsupported, they can affect a young person’s stability, choices, and future opportunities.

CJHS works with youth to address those risks early through housing, outreach, advocacy, reintegration, culturally responsive programming, and family support.

By helping young people build stability, strengthen their connections, and access the support they need, we can reduce risk, create more positive opportunities, and contribute to safer communities.

August 10th is Prisoners’ Justice Day, a day that began in Canada to remember people who died while incarcerated and to raise awareness about the rights and treatment of people in prison.

We believe Prisoners’ Justice Day highlights the importance of preparing people for a successful return to the community. Most people who are incarcerated will eventually be released. When they have access to education, employment, housing, health care, and other supports, they can return to the community with greater stability and a lower risk of being involved in the justice system again.

Accountability, opportunity, and effective support can help people build stability, reduce future involvement in the justice system, and contribute to safer communities.

Natalie Noble became Executive Director of the Calgary John Howard Society in January 2025, stepping into a role that felt like a natural extension of a career spent believing in second chances. A social worker by training who spent years at the Drop-In Centre before joining CJHS, Natalie came up through a sector that gets under your skin, one where you see firsthand what becomes possible when someone gets the right support at the right time.

Community safety is something we all play a role in.

Research shows that when individuals are supported in reconnecting with their community, the likelihood of repeat offences goes down.

At CJHS, we focus on creating those connections and supporting people as they move forward in a different direction.

Yesterday was a good day at Bedford.

The men, our staff, and Elder Toni set up a teepee for residents to use. Elder Toni guided the group, and the men worked together to raise it, piece by piece, learning as they went.

For many of the men, this is a real connection to culture and to home. It's a shift from concrete floors and walls to something rooted in nature and tradition.

That connection matters. For Indigenous men working to rebuild their lives, a strong sense of identity and belonging is one of the most powerful tools for lasting change. When people feel grounded in who they are, they're more likely to stay engaged, build healthy relationships, and stick with the hard work of change. Culture isn't separate from that work. It's part of it.

Watching the men problem-solve together, ask questions, and learn from Elder Toni was a reminder of what community can look like, even inside a residence.
