The rain never really let up, but neither did the conversations.

Yesterday, our Resettlement and Integration Services (RIS) team gathered at Land of Dreams, CCIS's urban farming and community-building initiative, for a Professional Development Day with Dr. Michael Lickers and was joined by Anne Harding. The cool temperatures and first signs of autumn provided the backdrop for a day centered on reconciliation and community engagement.

As one of the first teams many refugees, newcomers, and displaced individuals connect with after arriving in Canada, RIS staff help people navigate the early stages of settlement and begin building their lives in a new country.

Throughout the day, staff shared perspectives, asked questions, and reflected on how reconciliation can inform both our work and our relationships within the communities we serve. In between discussions, staff participated in team-building activities and enjoyed fresh produce shared by growers at Land of Dreams. A highlight of the day was cooking potatoes harvested from the land over the fire.

The day concluded around the fire, where staff gathered to continue discussions, share experiences, and enjoy time together.

Thank you to Dr. Michael Lickers and Anne Harding for sharing their knowledge, experiences, and teachings with our team, and to everyone who helped make the day meaningful. 💛

Last week at CCIS Calgary, we hosted a Peer Support Circle that was unforgettable.

We were joined by an incredible guest speaker— Sleman ALDib —Founder and Artistic Director of The Arab Canadian Theatre (Kawalease ACT), actor, writer, director, photographer, and recipient of the Canadian Arab Institute's "30 Under 30" Initiative Award.

Sleman shared his journey of arriving in Canada with zero English, feeling lost, and dreaming of becoming an actor while also wanting to give back to his community. He took survival jobs, changed roles often to learn English, and faced rejection after rejection.

But he kept going. 💡

He told our youth participants:
🔹 "You don't have to have everything figured out when you arrive. You just need to take the next step."
🔹 "Don't compare yourself to others—everyone has their own place and their own time."
🔹 "The sky can be grey or black at times, but you are on planet Earth to learn—not to figure everything out at once."

We explored the reality of starting over—the loneliness, the pressure from family and community, the guilt of not progressing fast enough. We talked about networking (building relationships before you need them), transferable skills (customer service → communication, theatre → teamwork, volunteering → community), and practical employment advice for tomorrow.

Sleman also shared a powerful moment from his journey: when Alberta Theatre Projects offered him 300 tickets, he told them he couldn't act in English. Their response? He could perform in Arabic with someone translating. Instead, he created a 15-minute silent show called Jasmine—and raised around $75,000 to sponsor a Syrian family to Canada.

That's resilience. That's community. That's hope.

He reminded our participants: "There is one chance in life—even if I make mistakes, it's okay."

Thank you, Sleman, for your vulnerability, your wisdom, and your light. You showed our youth that their past experiences matter, their struggles are valid, and their dreams are possible.

And to every refugee youth out there building a life from zero—your time will come. Keep going. One step at a time.

Stepping away from the office can create space for connection in new ways.

Our Business Employment and Training Services (BETS) team recently spent the day at Fish Creek Provincial Park for a Professional Development Day focused on connection, well-being, and team building.

Through group activities, conversations over lunch, and a fun Zumba session by Zin Zumba Ladies, team members had the opportunity to connect in a different setting and enjoy time outdoors together.

Investing in opportunities for connection and well-being helps build the strong, supportive teams that make our work possible every day.

Days like these remind us that strong teams are built not only through the work we do together, but also through the time we take to connect with one another.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success. 💛

This past weekend, CCIS hosted a successful Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW) Breakfast Café, welcoming Temporary Foreign Workers from across Calgary and the surrounding area.

Held in the CCIS lobby, the event provided a safe, welcoming space for workers to come together during a time of uncertainty surrounding changes to immigration policies. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, share concerns, learn about their rights and options, and connect with community services and resources.

Beyond information sharing, the Breakfast Café fostered meaningful connections. Attendees built new friendships, expanded their networks, shared experiences, and enjoyed a sense of community. By bringing workers and service providers together in one place, the event helped participants access support, find direction, and strengthen their sense of confidence, connection, and belonging.
