Every shift, Jan picks up the phone, not knowing who'll be on the other end.

The night Aditya called, he'd already tried everything the system offered. Doctor's appointments, intake forms, waitlists. He was doing everything right, and still felt alone and overwhelmed.

When he reached Distress Centre Calgary, Jan stayed with him. She helped him slow his breathing, make sense of what he was feeling, and think through his next steps. Not next week. That night.

Your monthly gift makes sure a trained, compassionate responder is always there to answer. For Aditya, and for the 50,000+ crisis conversations we supported last year.

Mental Health Awareness Month is an important reminder that mental health challenges do not follow a schedule. A crisis can happen quietly, unexpectedly, and often when someone feels most alone.

This month is about reducing stigma, encouraging conversation, and reminding people that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Alongside support from DCC, there are services across Calgary and Alberta that can help in different ways:

- 211 Alberta connects you 24/7 with community resources and supports
- Recovery Alberta provides access to mental health and addiction services across the province
- Alberta Health Services offers a range of supports, including Access Mental Health and the Mental Health and Addiction Line
- 988 Su***de Crisis Helpline Canada is also available 24/7 by phone or text for immediate support

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available 24/7. No one should have to face their hardest moments alone.

Today, we recognize and celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and maternal figures who provide love, strength, guidance, and support in ways seen and unseen.

We also know that for many, today can carry grief, loss, loneliness, or difficult memories.

At Distress Centre Calgary, we are reminded every day of the importance of compassion, connection, and simply being there for one another. To everyone celebrating, remembering, grieving, supporting, or navigating today in their own way, we see you.

If today feels heavy, you don't have to face it alone. Text or phone 403-266-4357, or chat at distresscentre.com.

Happy Mother's Day from all of us at Distress Centre.

After leaving his career in oil and gas, Bob found himself on a different path.

While navigating his own mental health challenges, he began to better understand himself and what mattered most. From that experience came a clear intention, to support others.

Today, Bob volunteers on the crisis lines and helps coach new crisis line volunteers at DCC.

For him, it starts with connection.

“It’s an opportunity and a privilege to support others, to be with and alongside people in crisis.”

He understands how much it matters to simply have someone there in those moments, not to fix anything, but to listen.

“To know that there’s somebody on the other end of a line… just to listen… is incredibly reassuring.”

That belief is what has kept Bob here at DCC, the chance to sit with someone, to listen without judgment, and to remind them they are not alone.

Thank you, Bob, for sharing your experience and for the care you bring to every conversation.
