Yet, the community is far enough away from both places to avoid some common pitfalls: it’s quiet, safe, close enough to enjoy the amenities of the core, but far enough away to avoid any rabble-rousing-related racket. In this respect, West Hillhurst has the best of both worlds. For Jim Eby, president of the West Hillhurst Community Association, that’s precisely why he moved to the area seven years ago with his wife and three children, ages seven, eight and 10.

“It came down to improving the quality of life for my family,” says Eby. “We used to live way up in the northeast, but in Calgary a lot of the attractions — things like the zoo, Edworthy Park and the Science Centre — are close to downtown. Now, I spend less time commuting and more time with my family doing fun stuff.”
