What does an archival conservator actually do?

Use expertise, training and highly specialized tools to preserve documents, books, records and images for future use.

In the case of this massive collection of historical photographs, our Conservation Advisor had to remove paper envelopes stuck to photographs and glass negative plates.

Not everyone gets to use a humidification chamber at work!

What does it mean to survive, and what is the cost of surviving?

Uche and Anna - both UCalgary Arts professors - invited the audience to consider this as they read from their deeply moving work:

We Survived Until We Could Live - Uche Umezurike
Wound Archive - Anna Veprinska

Thank you to University of Calgary Press and Gordon Hill Press & The Porcupine's Quill for investing in the written word and supporting authors whose work resonates. Thank you Shelf Life Books for creating such an uplifting space where Calgarians can come together in a “fellowship of words”.

When David Jones was 20, he took a summer job that would change the course of his life: traveling across Canada selling artifacts and archival materials from the Canadian Pacific Railway. The summer position turned into a 37-year career with a company that is fundamental to Canadian history. “It’s unprecedented,” he describes the company’s impact. “Nowhere else in the world was a private company so involved with the development of a nation.”

Even in retirement, Jones remains committed to the CPR. He’s written half a dozen books and anthologies about its history and is currently working on a new book, “From Cow Town to Now Town.” He hopes it will teach Calgarians all kinds of things about their city that they don’t know.

Jones regularly consults archives in the Glenbow Western Research Centre (2nd Floor, TFDL) to help bring history to life. The files of company records, engineering drawings, correspondence and newspaper articles offer glimpses of personalities, scandals, and unusual details that make his writing more colourful. He is highly methodical in his approach; sifting through folders with purposeful efficiency. His notebook contains details about the particular pieces of information he is looking for and notes on where they might be. But he is also open to surprise – to be captured by names and details and get carried away learning about them.

“You want to add something new to the historical record, otherwise there isn’t much point.”

Congratulations to Sylvia Polachuk on her retirement! Sylvia has been connected to LCR since 1980 shortly after completing her Bachelor of Music (Trombone) degree.

She started her career by cataloguing a huge collection of vinyl records purchased with the Heritage Fund. Eventually Sylvia moved over to the performing and fine arts library on the 9th floor of the ‘old’ library building where she loved getting to know the music students.

A career highlight was doing the research for
BeEH!thoven: The story of Canadian Theodore Frederic Molt meeting Ludwig van Beethoven in 1825 Vienna, Austria.

Sylvia co-presented it at the International Association of Music Libraries (IAML) in Prague in July 2022.

(Link in comments to view the story!)

After the conference, she toured around Prague, Vienna and spent a week at the Salzburg Festival hearing amazing concerts. A dream come true for a life-long musician!

“What I will miss the most are the people. I have worked with amazing people over the years and my Public Service Team buddies are the best, kindest and most knowledgeable people ever!”

In retirement, Sylvia hopes to sleep in, knit, garden, read and keep playing trombone with the New West Symphony & Chorus. Their annual spring concert is May 9 in the Jack Singer Hall if you want to see Sylvia in action!
