Buffalo Bean or Yellow Toadflax? These two yellow flowers are often confused in Rocky View County, but a closer look reveals some key differences.

🌱 Buffalo Bean is native and blooms earlier, with soft, bushy leaves and pea-like yellow flowers.
🌱 Yellow Toadflax is invasive, blooms later, and has narrow leaves with snapdragon-like flowers that feature an orange center.

Knowing the difference helps protect native landscapes. Swipe through to learn how to tell them apart.

High Water Advisory – Rocky View County: Use Caution Near Rivers, Creeks and Streams

Rocky View County is advising residents, especially those in western areas of the County, to use caution around rivers, creeks, and streams due to current rainfall and elevated water levels.

The Bow River water flows are expected to increase in the coming days due to snowmelt and forecast rain. Under the direction of provincial water management authorities, TransAlta is adjusting operations at Ghost Reservoir to create additional storage capacity and support flood mitigation efforts across the Bow River system. As a result, water levels and river flows downstream of Ghost Reservoir may rise over the coming days.

Residents are asked to:
▪️ Stay away from fast-flowing rivers, creeks, and streams
▪️ Keep off riverbanks, which may be unstable and can erode without warning
▪️ Keep children and pets well back from all waterways
▪️ Avoid recreational use of rivers and creeks until conditions improve
▪️ Respect closures
▪️ Check properties to ensure culverts, drainage paths, eavestroughs, and downspouts are clear and directing water away from buildings
▪️ Call 911 in an emergency

At this time, no widespread impacts are anticipated in Rocky View County; however, conditions can change quickly and localized issues are possible.

Rocky View County is actively monitoring conditions and will provide updates as needed. Residents are encouraged to monitor official weather forecasts and follow Rocky View County’s website, social media channels, Alberta Emergency Alert, and SAFE & SOUND notifications for the latest information, updates and advisories.

EMERGENCY INCIDENTS

Update #2 - Final - 11:00 p.m.

Fire crews continue to monitor and address hot spots along the rail corridor near Indus following multiple grass fires reported earlier this evening.

The fire has been contained within the rail corridor, and crews have successfully prevented further spread. One small outbuilding was lost; however, no injuries have been reported.

Rocky View County Fire Services extends its appreciation to all
mutual aid partners, including Calgary, Chestermere, Wheatland County, CPKC Rail crews, and all responding agencies for their rapid assistance and coordinated response to this fast-moving incident.

Highway 22X has reopened to traffic.

Rocky View County crews will remain on scene this evening, monitoring the rail corridor perimeter and addressing any remaining hot spots. CPKC crews will also continue a fire watch overnight.

This is expected to be the final public update for the evening.

Thank you to residents and motorists for your cooperation and patience throughout today's response.

Update #1 - 7:45 p.m. May 29

Emergency crews from Rocky View County, City of Calgary – Your Local Government, City of Chestermere, Wheatland County, and other mutual aid partners are actively responding to a series of grass fires reported along the CPKC rail line between Range Roads 274 and 281, Twp Roads 224 and 225.

A vehicle fire and as well as a separate motor vehicle collision at Hwy 22X and Range Road 280 are also being managed by responding agencies.

At this time:
• Multiple grass fires are being suppressed along the rail corridor.
• CPKC rail traffic has been stopped in the affected area.
• Emergency resources remain active throughout the corridor.
• No evacuation orders have been issued at this time.
• Information regarding any structures at risk is still being assessed.

Residents and motorists are asked to avoid the Highway 22X corridor near Indus and surrounding areas to allow emergency crews to work safely and efficiently.

Crews will remain active in all areas throughout the evening with fire control, monitoring and working on hotspots.

Rocky View County will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
