06/10/2026

Due to improved conditions on the Bow River, the Calgary Fire Department is lifting the boating advisory issued on Friday, May 29, effective immediately.

Flow rates on both the Bow and Elbow rivers have decreased and river conditions have improved, however there is still reduced visibility, and the water temperature remains cold. At these levels, people can resume normal activities on and around our City’s rivers but are encouraged to use caution.

Along with turbidity and debris, conditions for a Calgary Fire Department boating advisory include Bow River flow rates exceeding 280 cubic metres per second above the Elbow River confluence.

Calgary Fire and its Aquatics Team will continue to monitor and patrol Calgary’s waterways.

As always, Calgarians are reminded to use caution and be prepared for anything on the water. All watercraft users must wear lifejackets, ensure they have the required equipment for boating, and must avoid consuming alcohol and other intoxicants on Calgary’s waterways.

Find out more about how to float and boat safely at calgary.ca/watersafety as well as calgary.ca/flood for information on river conditions.

06/09/2026

From early crossings to surviving powerful floods, Centre Street Bridge has connected Calgary for over a century.

In 1908, the first steel bridge was built connecting the north and south banks of the Bow River. Floodwaters rose in 1915 and partially swept it away. New construction plans began and in 1916 the original steel bridge was replaced by the four-arch-spanned, highly ornamental, concrete bridge that we all recognize today. Nearly a century later, when the river rose again during the 2013 flood, the bridge endured and continues to be a defining landmark of our city.

On International Archives Day, we’re celebrating the stories that shape our city. The City Archives offers a window into Calgary’s past. It is open for anyone to explore the stories, photos and documents that have shaped our history.

Visit the Municipal Complex (800 Macleod Trail SE) and check out the current Archives Exhibit on the changing Calgary landscape on until the end of September. Explore Calgary’s history at calgary.ca/archives.

Scotia Place and Calgary's Culture + Entertainment District have been designed to deliver inclusive, barrier-free experiences for everyone. Some of the many accessible features and supporting infrastructure being integrated across Scotia Place and The C + E District include:

• Seamless street-level access: 14 Ave S.E. (between 5A St and Stampede Tr S.E.) is being raised by 2 metres (6.5 feet) to create seamless, barrier-free connections between Scotia Place, the surrounding plazas and the broader C+E District – enhancing accessibility, the pedestrian experience and multi-modal movement.
• Service animal relief areas: Two dedicated spaces – one indoors and one outdoors.
• Sensory-friendly quiet rooms: Calm, quiet spaces throughout the building to provide a place to reset and reduce sensory overload.
• Inclusive sport design: Both the Esso Community Arena and main facility are designed to support adaptive sport, including sledge hockey.

As Scotia Place continues to take shape within The Culture + Entertainment District, these features and the public realm improvements will help create a destination where everyone feels welcome, comfortable and connected.

June 2 update: Rivers expected to peak today as rainfall eases – no widespread flooding anticipated in Calgary.

Over the past three days, precipitation in Calgary has exceeded the monthly average of 80 mm, with 10 – 15 mm more expected today. River flows are tracking as expected and conditions will continue to be monitored.

What to expect:
• Some low-level pathways remain closed, with possible additional closures as river levels peak.
• Water pooling may continue in streets and catch basins.
• City crews are monitoring for riverbank erosion and damages to infrastructure and drainage systems; no damage has been reported.

🚧 As a precaution, crews have completed drainage checks, cleared catch basins and deployed a pump in Bowness.

Evacuations, major closures and flood barrier activation are not anticipated at this time.

⚠️Stay safe near rivers:
• Fast-moving, cold and debris-filled water creates hazardous conditions.
• Keep a safe distance from riverbanks and follow all advisories.
• A City of Calgary Boating Advisory remains in effect. Check calgary.ca/watersafety for updates.
