June is Refugee Awareness month. The UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, released data in June of 2025 that stated over 122 million people — one in every 67 individuals — are forcibly displaced. This number has doubled in the last 10 years. Every time there is a worldwide crisis, we see people arriving in Calgary with hope in their back pocket. Seeking safety is a human right. For everyone. Everywhere.

From April 1, 2023 to December 2025, CFN has helped more than 10,000 refugees.

Hello there! Take a moment to pause and check in with yourself:
What are 5 things around you that you haven’t noticed today?
What are 4 things you can touch?
What are 3 sounds you can hear?
What are 2 things you can smell?
What is 1 thing you can taste?

If you just answered those, you’ve already started grounding yourself in the present moment. Nearly 6,600 clients have turned to CFN’s Therapy and Support Centre in the past year for therapeutic counselling, crisis intervention, and case management—supporting individuals and families in building emotional, social, and behavioural well-being.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, let’s remember mental health matters every day. Taking care of our minds is just as important as caring for our bodies. Small steps, like pausing to breathe or reaching out for support, can make a big difference. If you, or someone you know, needs help, visit www.centrefornewcomers.ca/support.

Every strong city is shaped by dedicated individuals striving to create a brighter tomorrow. In Calgary, newcomers enrich our communities and economy every single day, sharing their talents, skills, and ideas across every sector. Their journeys are woven with perseverance, ambition, and hope.

At CFN, we’re proud to support individuals and families as they navigate new opportunities, create meaningful connections, and build fulfilling lives in Alberta. We believe that communities thrive when everyone has the chance to belong and succeed. With your compassion and support, transformation becomes possible. Together, we empower newcomers not just to adapt but to genuinely thrive.

What does “community” mean to you?

CFN was thrilled to host Pathways to Employment: Trades Edition, a vibrant event that connected newcomers, industry leaders, and community partners to explore rewarding careers in the skilled trades. Participants gained firsthand insights from industry experts, discovered CFN’s expanding trades and construction programs, and built valuable relationships to support their career journeys.

A huge thank you to our distinguished speakers: Tammy Amstutz (Calgary Construction Association), Karen Rutherford (Alberta Roofing Contractors Association), and Oscar Orduz (Graham Construction). We are grateful for their generosity in sharing expertise and inspiration. Thank you to everyone who attended for your enthusiasm, engagement, and commitment to building brighter futures.

This event is a shining example of Career & Employment Services at work. By opening doors to skills development, networking, and employment, CFN empowers newcomers and strengthens our local economy. Did you know? Every $1 invested in CFN Career & Employment Services generates $9 in client income and $2 in tax revenue, providing a tangible impact for individuals, families, employers, and our entire community.
