SARVAC National SAR Canine Program: Moving Toward a National Standard🐾

🦺 Volunteer canine teams are a vital part of Canada’s search and rescue system but until now, there’s been no unified national standard guiding their training, role, or deployment. That’s changing.

SARVAC’s National SAR Canine Program is leading the development of a Canada-wide standard to ensure:
✔️ Consistent training and operational readiness
✔️ Clear expectations for handlers and canines
✔️ Improved safety and insurance eligibility
✔️ Stronger trust with the public and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs)

⛑️ Funded through a Search and Rescue New Initiatives Fund (SARNIF) grant from Public Safety Canada, this work will result in a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standard, aligned with existing national SAR competencies.

A national working group, made up of experienced SAR canine volunteers, key parties of interest, Indigenous partners, and AHJ representatives—is driving the work forward. The CSA Z1620 GSAR Technical Committee is ensuring the standard meets the highest levels of accuracy, clarity, and technical integrity.

Where we are now:
Core competencies have been defined, outlining handler qualifications, canine performance expectations, and operational roles.

Public Review now open:
As of April 12th, the CSA Z1620 GSAR draft is officially posted for a Public Review period, closing June 9, 2026.

📄 Review the draft & provide feedback:

French: https://publicreview.csa.ca/Home/Details/6118

We encourage you to share these links with colleagues and key parties of interest. All feedback must be submitted directly through the CSA Public Review site.

This is a key step toward safer, more consistent, and more credible SAR canine operations across Canada.🇨🇦

Consultation publique maintenant ouverte:

Anglais : https://publicreview.csa.ca/Home/Details/6117

Today these members of our team carried out the fall annual roadside litter pick up. They cleaned the ditches along 5 km of highway 8, from the intersection with hwy 208, to Caledonia. In that distance they picked up 11 bags of trash and 6 bags of recyclables.
Thanks to all of you who honked or waved, we appreciate your support!
