🌟 Remembering a Remarkable Leader 🌟

Today, we honor the memory of Dr. Shashi Assanand, a true visionary and tireless advocate for our community. On the second anniversary of her passing, we celebrate the extraordinary life of a woman who dedicated herself to making a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals.

🌍 Driven by Compassion and Purpose 🌍

Dr. Shashi Assanand, a nationally renowned registered social worker, left an indelible mark on the Vancouver and Lower Mainland Multicultural Family Support Society (VLMFSS) and the entire community. After 26 years as VLMFSS's Executive Director, she retired in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, courage, and change.

🌺 A Champion for Immigrant and Refugee Families 🌺

As a refugee from Uganda, Dr. Assanand understood the unique challenges faced by immigrant and refugee women and their families. She dedicated her career to supporting and empowering these communities, advocating for their rights, and raising awareness of the issues they faced.

πŸ’ͺ Transforming Lives, One Act of Kindness at a Time πŸ’ͺ

Under Dr. Assanand's leadership, VLMFSS became a beacon of hope, providing counseling and support to immigrant and refugee women and children experiencing family violence. Through her unwavering commitment, the organization touched the lives of over 43,500 women, making more than 780,000 meaningful connections over 29 years.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Dr. Assanand was awarded the prestigious Order of British Columbia, the Anthony J. Hulme Award, and the YWCA Women of Distinction Award. She also received an honorary degree from UBC in 2021, highlighting her enduring impact on society.
