PFDs save lives! 24 personal floatation devices were donated today to the City of Dawson, Yukon - Local Government Pool and Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin First Nation, through our Swim to Survive grant with Canucks Autism Network.

Another 12 PFDs will be donated to a lifejacket loaner station near the George Black Ferry to encourage boaters to use a lifejacket before heading out on the Yukon River.

Thank you to Commercial Aquatic Supplies for their support with this project as we gear up for a safer summer.

ALWAYS wear your lifejacket. Drowning is preventable, especially when we plan for safety and gear up. Get water smart - find expert advice on our website: https://www.lifesaving.bc.ca/

Today, we're launching our new Lifesaving Society ad campaign across British Columbia with the in-kind support of the BC Association of Broadcasters. This public service announcement airs from June 1-August 31 during a peak 2026 season of water activities, with an estimated ~$275,000 in donated airtime across the province.

Watch and listen for our ad on local TV/radio stations. A heartfelt thank you to the Broadcasters of BC for helping power this campaign and supporting our urgent mission of drowning prevention.

Yesterday, Surrey City Council unanimously approved a motion that directs staff to implement a program of free City-run swim lessons for children ages 3-12. As they identify next steps, the goal is to launch the program this summer on or around July 1. We're thrilled to see this support for basic skills/safety as we head into a busy season of water fun and increased risks especially for children.

British Columbia has seen tragic losses this week with reported drowning fatalities, including three people on a fishing boat near Savary Island, two people in two separate incidents at a beach and boat ramp in Nanaimo, a person who was scuba diving in West Vancouver, an additional person scuba diving off of Gabriola Island, and a person whose vehicle plunged into the North Thompson River during an automotive incident in Kamloops. Our thoughts go out to their loved ones and communities.

These devastating events are a reminder of the urgency of our mission: preventing drowning and reducing water-related injury. Please take extra care in/near the water and review essential advice to stay safe: https://www.lifesaving.bc.ca/watersmart-education/water-safety/

We love to see Professional Women's Hockey League athletes from the Goldeneyes geared up for fun on the water, as they enjoy adventures in BC during the hockey off-season. Looking good in these PFDs - a smart choice for Safe Boating Awareness Week which wraps up today!

Free swim lessons may be coming to Vancouver! Yesterday, Vancouver City Council voted unanimously to develop plans to make basic swim skill instruction free for all residents, with a special emphasis on children ages 3-12.

While councillors considered the motion, which cited the Lifesaving Society as a local expert, our branch executive director, Lenea Grace, addressed the council meeting. As Lenea said: "Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death of children under the age of five in Canada (...) There is no better way to prevent [drowning] than to intervene early with lessons."

Thank you to all who continue to champion water safety and will work on the next steps to make this idea a reality.

It’s Safe Boating Awareness Week!

From May 16-22, we’re joining the Canadian Safe Boating Council in reminding everyone to stay safe on the water and make every boating trip a safe one.

This week highlights five key boating safety messages focused on preventing the most common boating-related incidents:

🦺 Wear Your Lifejacket
Over 80% of Canadians who drown while boating were not wearing a lifejacket or were not wearing it properly.

🚫 Boat Sober
Whether it’s prescription drugs, alcohol, or cannabis, operating a vessel while impaired is dangerous and illegal.

🥶 Be Cold Water Safe
Cold water can quickly impair even strong swimmers and significantly reduce the ability to stay afloat following sudden immersion.

⚓ Be Prepared — You and Your Vessel
Ensure your boat is properly equipped, check weather conditions, carry enough fuel, and file a trip plan before heading out.

📚 Take a Boating Course
Operators of powered recreational vessels should carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or other proof of competency.

Today’s office dress code: business casual with some flotation flair for Wear Your Lifejacket at Work Day!

Over 75% of Canadians who drown while boating were not wearing a lifejacket. This long weekend and always, be sure to wear a lifejacket or PFD when boating. Choose it, use it, and remember - it won’t work if you don’t wear it.
