Looking for a fun way to get outside to Nature?

This June, explore Metro Vancouver’s regional parks and greenways for Great Outdoors Month! Pay attention to plants, fungi, mosses, and wildlife you haven’t noticed before. Then simply snap photos of what you discover and share your photos on iNaturalist.

iNaturalist is a great way to build your nature knowledge and get feedback on your observations. What’s more, you’ll be joining a global community of citizen scientists and contributing to biodiversity science.

It’s a fun outdoor activity for everyone, on your own or with your family.

All participants who register and take part in the “Regional Parks Snap & Share 2026” iNaturalist project will be entered into a raffle to win a park prize pack!

Check out the Regional Parks Snap & Share project page on iNaturalist to see what others have been observing in Burnaby Lake Regional Park, other regional parks and greenways, and view the leaderboard.

Please take photos safely. Don’t approach wildlife, stay on trails, and don’t pick or remove anything.

One of the highlights of our World Migratory Bird Day outings was spotting Cinnamon Teals, which is one of the featured Bird Ambassadors of this year’s campaign. Two other ambassador species can be spotted at Burnaby Lake: the Barn Swallow (tip: visit the Burnaby Lake Rowing Pavilion for a likely sighting for your checklist ) and the Merlin. Learn more about them and other global ambassadors here by swiping left ⬅️ and the beautiful artwork for this year’s campaign by artist Luisa Lacerda .do.ceu

Our early morning leader recorded 52 species during the outing. ⬅️ to check out what they saw/heard.

The theme for World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2026, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observation Matter” highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations and their habitats and factors that impact their populations and contribute to our knowledge about how to protect them. Community science, ranging from backyard bird counts to large-scale coordinated surveys/schemes, provide information on species distribution, abundance trends, migration timing, and breeding success. This data is important to identify conservation priorities, and inform effective conservation action plans and strategies. By engaging individuals and communities in monitoring efforts, we not only gather scientific data but also build a deeper connection to nature, raise awareness about the challenges migratory birds face, and inspire direct conservation action.

It’s a great time to visit Burnaby Lake and see the local year-round birds as well as the start of migratory birds that are making a stop there on their way north to their breeding grounds.

Guided Bird Outing

We’re popping up in the park on Sunday to offer two outings. BLPA Volunteer leaders will share their knowledge and passion for birds while wandering through Burnaby Lake trails and at end up at Piper Spit. We’ll listen for calls and songs, enjoy discussion on topics such as bird habitat and plumage, and share tips.

If possible, bring a pair of binoculars that will allow you to identify and enjoy distant birds easily. We will have binoculars to lend out if you do not have your own pair.

We’re offering two outings:
• 10:30-11:30 am
• 12:00-1:30 pm
