Another special announcement for this Firefighter Friday- Trina Matycio has been promoted to Lieutenant! Trina has been with Brooks Fire since early 2018, and, shortly after joining, went to school in late 2018 to become a Registered Nurse. Trinaโ€™s years of experience in the emergency department during her nursing career make her invaluable on emergency scenes. Among many other great qualities, she brings an incredibly positive attitude and a passion for helping people to every situation she is involved in and for that all members of Brooks Fire are very appreciative of her. Congrats on your well deserved promotion, Trina!

๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’ Fire Chief Friday ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’๐Ÿš’
In this special edition of Firefighter Friday weโ€™d like to introduce our new Deputy Chief, Callum Duncan and new Fire Chief, Barry Yokoyama. Shortly after Barry was promoted to Chief, Callum was selected from a group of highly qualified candidates to become the new Deputy Chief for Brooks Fire Department.

Callum has been with Brooks Fire for 8 years and in that time has demonstrated leadership, humility, kindness, knowledge and integrity along with a great attitude that lead to him being chosen for this position. One of our favourite things about Callum is that he is a journeyman welder and can weld almost anything. Whether itโ€™s fixing training props or improving our confined space and burn building, Callum is our in-house welding professional!

Barry has been with Brooks Fire for 29 years and has been an important piece of our department since he joined. Barry started as a volunteer and worked his way up to Deputy Chief before being promoted to Chief earlier this year. Barryโ€™s years of dedication, long hours at the hall and on scene, weeks on call and putting up with all of us volunteers hasnโ€™t been an easy feat but we greatly appreciate his commitment to our department and community. We also appreciate his kind heartedness, expertise and sense of humour. Barry has years of mechanical experience as a journeyman mechanic, and among his many other jobs enjoys keeping our trucks shiny, clean and in good working condition.

Congratulations to both Deputy Chief Duncan and Chief Yokoyama on your new positions!

Today, May 4th, is International Firefighters Day. Brooks Fire Department would like to take the time to share our gratitude for those that make the ultimate sacrifice day in and day out, whether it be volunteer or full-time firefighters. Our Brooks firefighters dedicate a great amount of time and effort to honing their skills and being involved in our community, from public events to emergency situations, we thank you for all that you do!
Here are some incredible photos courtesy of Captain Byron Skanderup to celebrate our great department and honour all Brooks Fire members, past and present!

At 10:27 AM on April 24th, Brooks Fire responded to a semi rollover South of Brooks on Highway 1. While finishing up at the first scene Brooks Fire was dispatched to a second MVC just North of Brooks involving two vehicles at 11:15 AM. Upon arrival, Brooks Fire was made aware of a third accident just down the road on Highway 1 which involved two more vehicles and a semi. Highway 1 Westbound right lane was shut down while crews worked on both scenes. Shortly after the third incident occurred a semi-truck and trailer jack-knifed across both lanes. Highway 1 was then shut down while Brooks Fire, County and City Peace Officers, RCMP, EMS and tow crews worked to control traffic and clean up the area. All of these calls were attended by Command 207, Rescue 220 and Brooks Fire members that stood out in the cold with law enforcement to ensure traffic control went smoothly and no other accidents occurred. No serious injuries were reported at any of the incidents! Great work 220 crew and thanks to all other agencies involved for a quick response and support!

Today marks the last day of Chief Kevin Swansonโ€™s career as he is set to retire after almost 40 years of service to our fine city and 3 decades as Fire Chief.

Serving first as a volunteer starting in 1987 and becoming full time in 1995, Chief Swanson has made a significant impact on all volunteer firefighters, past and present, as well as many citizens in our community. Chief Swanson played a large role in the development of what Brooks Fire is today, creating the welcoming and family-like environment that our firefighters have come to know and love. Among a multitude of other great qualities, Chief Swansonโ€™s unwavering dedication to making our community a better and safer place is nothing short of incredible, he is always willing to teach and inspire those around him, he is extremely passionate about what he does, and above all else he spreads positivity and a good joke where ever he can. To celebrate our Chief and all that he has accomplished, our volunteers and captains created a wall mounted plaque and axe holder with a list of current members at the time of his retirement. Special thanks to Chris McIver for donating the materials and bringing that exceptional tribute to fruition. Brooks RCMP members Sgt. Harms, Sgt. Schmidt and Sgt. Searle also presented Chief Swanson with a beautiful leather patch handmade by Sgt. Schmidt to signify their appreciation for the partnership between Brooks RCMP and Brooks Fire Department.

Thank you Chief, for all that you have done, words are not enough to express our gratitude. Brooks Fire wishes you nothing but the best in your future endeavours.
