It is a sad day for our fire family.

We are heartbroken to share the passing of former Fire Captain Rick Reis, an honourary lifetime member of the Beausejour Brokenhead Firefighters Association, and a man who gave so much of himself to this community.

Rick served as a Captain with BBFD, working alongside the RCMP to keep the people of Beausejour Brokenhead safe. He was a mentor, a leader, and a true friend to the fire family. The kind of person who made everyone around him better just by showing up.

To his partner Melissa and his family, we are so sorry for your loss. Please know that Rick is remembered with tremendous respect and gratitude by everyone whose life he touched in this department and beyond.

Rick, you served your community well. We will carry on from here, and we will honour you on every call.

Rest easy, friend.

🚨 Brush Fire 🚨

Yesterday at 19:37 hours, our members responded to a brush fire in the Town of Beausejour. Heavy smoke was visible to responding crews while en route to the scene. Once on scene, members quickly brought the fire under control and prevented further spread.
Conditions remain extremely dry and even though the vegetation has greened up, fires can still spread rapidly. Please use caution with any outdoor burning and report any signs of fire immediately.
Great work by all members involved in the response.

Sheila has the right idea.

It is hot out there this week. We are talking high 20s, pushing into the low 30s, and our crew is feeling it just like everyone else. Slurpee season is officially open and we fully support it.

What we do not support quite as much is what this heat is doing to fire conditions. Grass fire calls are picking up and we want to talk about why that matters and what you can do about it.

There is no burn ban in effect right now, but that does not mean conditions are forgiving. Heat, low humidity, and wind are a bad combination and we are seeing all three this week. If you are burning, please burn smart.

A few things that can make all the difference:

Stay on site. Do not light a fire and walk away, not even for a few minutes. Conditions can change fast and an unattended fire is how a controlled burn becomes our problem and yours.

Have a water source ready before you light up. A garden hose, a water tank, a full pail. Whatever you have, have it close.

If you are burning a larger pile, trench around it. Scrape down to bare dirt around the perimeter to give the fire nowhere to go.

Check the wind before you start. If it is gusty or picking up, wait for a better day.

Burn during cooler parts of the day when conditions are calmer. Early morning is better than mid-afternoon on a hot week like this one.

Extinguish completely before you leave. Stir the ashes, add water, stir again. If it is still warm to the touch, it is not out.

We would rather spend this week enjoying the weather than responding to calls that could have been prevented. You can help us do that.

Stay cool out there. Sheila will show you how.

One of Beausejour's own is doing something incredible and we want to make some noise about it.

Mady Kennedy is cycling across Canada to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. She recently passed through her hometown of Beausejour and we were proud to cheer her on. This cause hits close to home for us in more ways than one. Mady's brother is a former member of the BBFD, which makes her part of the fire family as far as we are concerned.

Cancer is not an abstract issue in the fire service. It is an occupational reality. Between 2007 and 2021, cancer accounted for 84.6 per cent of Canadian firefighter fatality claims. Firefighters carry a 9Mady cent higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14 per cent higher risk of dying from it compared to the general public. Research into cancer prevention and treatment is not just important to us. It is personal.

Mady is riding for all of it and she deserves every bit of support we can give her.

The link to donate is in our bio. You can also scan the QR code to donate.

We are challenging every fire department across Manitoba to get behind Mady's ride. Share this post, make a donation, and let's show her what the fire community is made of.

🚨 I-Phone Crash notification 🚨

At 11:46 a.m., our members responded to an iPhone crash notification in the RM of Brokenhead. Our response time today was especially impressive, as some of our members were in the middle of completing their First Aid and CPR training at the hall.
Upon arrival, no accident was located and crews cleared the scene and returned to the hall.
A big thank you to Devin at McMurren Emergency Response Training for providing this valuable education. Everyone successfully completed their certifications today.
If you're looking to get your First Aid and CPR certification, give Devin a call!

Today we were lucky enough to es**rt Mady Kennedy into Beausejour. For those who don’t know, Mady is traveling coast to coast to raise money for cancer research and it was an honour to be part of her journey today.
Our members were out collecting donations and handing out ice cream while showing support for an incredible cause. Thank you to everyone who came out, donated and helped make the day special.
Keep it going Mady, we’re all cheering you on! 🎗️👏

This just shows how important a working smoke detector really is. If this could happen in Headingley, it could happen here too. Take a few minutes to check your smoke detectors, make a fire escape plan with your family and remember once you get out, stay out. Never go back inside a burning building. Those few seconds can save lives.

PLEASE READ

HFD was dispatched at 5:17am to a possible fire in a structure. The homeowners were woken up by their smoke detector sounding. Initially thinking the batteries were low, but the chirping persisted. The homeowners evacuated the home and met us outside.

After an extensive search, HFD identified a hotspot in the bathroom ceiling. After breaching the ceiling, it was clear that there has been a slow burning fire throughout the trusses and supports in the roofline. The cause… we suspect a lightning strike!!⚡️

A second crew went up on the roof and found the entry point of the lightning strike, directly above the bathroom.

This is one of those stories that had there not been a witness, no one would believe it. And this is a story worth sharing!

And this is an important message to having working smoke detectors!! The smoke detector, directly outside the bathroom and in the hallway outside the bedrooms, started to chirp even without visible smoke or flames. The only indication was a smell of smoke. With the quick action of the homeowners to call 9-1-1, we were able to extinguish and contain it. If they continued to believe it was low battery, it may have been too late by the time HFD arrived.

Please test your smoke detectors today!🔥🚒
