From 23-26 April 2026, The Brockville Rifles were in Winnipeg representing 33 CBG in the 2026 Rifles Council. Rifles Council is an annual military skills competition designed to push Canada’s 5 Rifles Regiments to their limits in the mission tasks that are typically assigned to Rifle units. These units specialize in small unit tactics, and common tasks include advanced forward reconnaissance, setting observation posts, spotting, and calling indirect fire support.

Hosted by The Royal Winnipeg Rifles, the 2026 competition was characterized by the unforgiving terrain of CFB Shilo. Over a 24 hour window, teams were tested on their marksmanship, navigation skills, their ability to camouflage and conceal an observation post, conduct reconnaissance tasks, judge distance, call in accurate fire support, and conduct a CASEVAC of a severely wounded casualty across a 25km trace. Teams faced some of the most challenging conditions imaginable, with baseline winds of 35km/hr and gusts up to 50km/hr with a combination of rain, sleet, and snow.

The competition concluded with teams invited by our host to attend the Battle of Fish Creek Mess Dinner, boosting esprit de corps amongst the rifle regiments and reinforcing the rifle regiment ethos; an ethos defined by initiative at the lowest level, disciplined aggression, and the expectation that every soldier operates with the independence, fieldcraft, and precision of a rifleman.

Thank you The Royal Winnipeg Rifles for being exceptional hosts, and we look forward to attending the 2027 Rifles Council hosted by The Royal Regina Rifles in Regina, SK.
